Hot job for UM grad

Post by 4dcats » Thu Jun 03, 2004 8:57 am

Looks like that fine UM education is serving Mr. Molden well!! Not sure if he is referring to his job our the education he received at UM when he so eloquently says "It sucked DOG!" Good thing the arena league stepped in to save him - that should last another year or two!!!

By JON KASPER of the Missoulian

Etu Molden worked in the newspaper business while he was out of football.

The former Montana Grizzly wide receiver awoke early each day in California's Capital City to toss the Sacramento Bee on the doorsteps of subscribers.

"It sucked, dog,'' Molden said while standing at a car dealership in Chicago talking on his cell-phone Wednesday afternoon. "You had to get up early in the morning and work petty much before anyone else was up.''

Looks like he has a good work ethic to me. Maybe he was doing something early in the am to make some money so he could free up his afternoons to work out.
Your bias is showing with part of the story...nice try
Here is the rest of the story.

Chicago Rush
Molden named Rookie of the Month

Rush WR/LB Etu Molden (Steve Woltmann)

May 6, 2004 – Chicago Rush rookie WR/LB Etu Molden was named AFL Rookie of the Month for April, the Arena Football League announced today.

In four games, the Rookie of the Year candidate caught 37 passes for 492 yards and eight touchdowns, and was named the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Game twice. In addition, Molden recorded 6.5 tackles and recovered a fumble during April.

“Etu Molden has done a fantastic job for us this year,” said Rush head coach Mike Hohensee. “With Lindsay Fleshman hurt and out of the lineup the past few weeks, Etu’s role has intensified and he has come through for us.”

This exchange reminds me of the feel good stories that popped up when Kurt Warner first had success in the NFL. I don't know how many times we got to hear the heart warming story about how he was a stock boy in the supermarket after getting out of college before he found success in the Arena League and then the NFL.

The part I never understood was... what kind of guy can go to college for four years, then only be qualified to work as a stock boy (or bag boy, or whatever his official title was)? Was he banking his career on that one in a million shot of NFL fame? If he wouldn't have made it, did his Northern Iowa education only give him a fallback position of one day being a check-out guy (if the promotions all worked out in his favor, of course).

I have to assume that Northern Iowa alums hated it whenever that story came up.

Yeah, I'm not a Warner fan, as you can tell. I have a bit of a bias.

Hey guys, take it easy on 4dcats. Right now he's only on fries, but next year he'll be assistant manager of burger flipping. That's where the big bucks start rolling in.

I was recruited to be a cat out of high school. The guy showing me around campus was later (after graduation) arrested for car theft. What kind of guy goes to school for four years and is only qualified to steal cars.

Many football players have a dream of playing pro ball. Didn't the cats have a few non drafted players who tried out or are going to try to continue their careers? I respect a kid who works the crappy jobs to pay rent while he peruses his goal. They may not make it but they're trying.

Point taken on the car thief -- he could have reached a little higher with his ambitions. If he were to make the NFL and the announcers would bring up a touchy feely story every 10 seconds about how he used to be a scrappy car thief before he made it big as an NFL player, I wouldn't really puff out my chest as an MSU alum.

If the best job a guy can get while he is waiting for a pro career to materialize is as a stock boy, then I guess that's fine. It just makes me wonder how much time he spent in class and thinking about a non-football career while he was in school. Most of the former college football players I know landed really good jobs.

This would have been a complete non-issue with me were it not for the constant repetition of his stock boy rags to riches story -- it's just not the message I thought it put out about football players (if it weren't for football, they'd be stock boys), especially since it was a I-AA school, and some people assume that that I-AA football players are just players who aren't smart enough to play I-A.

Oh, and his wife gives me the heebie jeebies, and his post-game interviews are a little too close to a sermon to be tolerable. Other than that, I guess he's a good guy, but I still don't like him.

Since this is a smack board, though, I guess I have to feel a little sympathy for the hard working fifth grader with a bike and a dream that Etu edged out for the job. How can a grade schooler compete with a college grad?

I would guess that the "sucky" jobs may be do to the time of day these people need to work so that they can do football related activities during the day. Hard to get a full time corporate job that lets your afternoons free!

Too bad they didn't post Molden's other history in Billings of fighting with cops/ramming cop cars (with his buddy Yo). Yeah, he sure is a role model thats for sure! I didn't even know he got out of jail yet? :)

He might make the NFL as it seems more and more of those are the type of people they are looking for. Maybe its ROID RAGE?

I think we hit on a touchy spot for the Griz fans. Didn't Craig Ouch stock groceries or something after he left Colorado?

Wow, thanks for the insight cat fans!!! You're right, I'll just run over the the Joey Thomas bandwagon and jump right on...(sarcasm)

Amazing how a UM kid does well and he gets bashed by the cat mongers but we should all support the UW transfer bobcat in the NFL...typical bobcat justice

That was really good post, BozGriz. Your subtle wording was perfect -- yeah, it got under my skin just a bit (you know we have the U-Dub thing), yet it wasn't too abrasive. In terms of pot-stirring posts, that one was really good.

In the grander scheme of things, though, from the viewpoint of some of the more vocal Griz fans, both are evil. After all, neither one of them was born in Montana, so we should dislike them both (how's that for changing the subject?).

Yeah, well, we're just all down here stockpiling cash so we can buy up the rest of Montana and teach you people the right way to think and act. It's a large burden, but we handle it well.
