Chronicle on Monte situation

Post by BozoneCat » Wed Feb 16, 2005 1:19 am

Here's the "official" word on the whole Monte situation. It really confounds me that the morons running UM actually defend him, but I suppose we shouldn't be surprised.

On a happy note, I got quoted!!! :D

I was surprised he used an actual quote on the internet story, without masking the word "crap". Did the actual verbage show up in the print version. Crap is an acceptable word for internet forums, but for the local newspaper??

I have exchanged emails with Mr. Brown, author of this article, about a past article. He, or she, Kellyn? seemed like a very professional and responsible reporter.

I just thought the 100% acurate quote was interesting.

I think if you are quoting what someone else says it's OK to use "Crap" even if what they say isn't crap!

At least Don Read had enough class to see the logic. That guy seems to be a lone bright spot in an otherwise sea of crap. I don't think we can say the same for Ms. Anderson.

Way to go Bozone on getting quoted. That was a pretty much perfect line though - I am not surprised as to why it was picked out.

One would think the folks over the divide would somehow learn what they feel is acceptable behavior is not allowed in many of the other venues; I wandered over to their site last night and in addition to many great threads, ran upon and read one about a poor fizzlie complaining about the word "suck" out of a youngsters mouth. Having had the priviledge of attending high school and college football games in the southeast for many, many years, I've grown accustomed to hearing one side or the other start the cheer "You Suck" when the opponent really screws up. Even read the one where Yale was able to get Harvard to spell "We Suck" at their game this year. Guess it just comes down to what my Godmother would tell me: "Sticks and stones will break your bones but words will never hurt you." (She's also the one that convinced me the national anthem doesn't end with "Kick Ass Cats" in the early sixties. Hopefully, Champ continues to display such a high level of class and not let something like ballot stuffing go to his head...

The men's basketball team is in a virtual tie for first place and trying to get the tourney in Bozeman and almost all of the posts over the last two days have been about the Griz mascot. If Monte really did put people in danger then he should have gotten the boot, I will trust Don Read on this one. But I have heard cat fans say they get sick of hearing about the Griz and don't really care about what the Griz do, well hear you guys are freaking out about Monte. Just seems to me you would want to worry more about how good your team has come along, or what the hell is the matter with your women's program and not worry about "flea-ridden bag of crap"!

She said Monte and MSU's mascot Champ were teasing each other, like mascots often do, and Monte moved the steps to trip Champ and quickly put them back in their place.

Monte was talked to before the game and was told about what was and wasn't allowed, Anderson said, and Monte was following the rules.

"It was frustrating for our mascot," Anderson said. "The things our mascot does at home all the time, to us, are just normal and funny. MSU didn't find it amusing."
"They were not intentionally doing anything to make the administration mad," Anderson said. "What Monte does at home, we now know is not allowed in other venues."
This Christie Anderson lady is full of crap! If Monte were following the rules, there would have been no action taken. I don't know Peter Fields personally, but I get the impression that he is a very fair, yet no nonsense kind of guy. There is no way he would have tossed that punk in the monte suit, if all the rules were being followed.

This article could have gone on for pages about all the classless sh!t that he was doing. Did anyone see him spraying silly string at our band members (and inside their instruments) while they were playing. Or spraying silly string directly into the face of one of our student from about 2 feet away. Or maybe when he was harassing an older couple behind the basket and pushing them out of their seat.

Bottom line is that Monte crossed the line more than once, and I have a feeling that the ban was partly punishment, and partly for his own protection. I had some friends that were at the women's game sat night, and were plotting an attack on Monte for Sunday's game. If he were allowed to do whatever he pleased on Sunday, I have no doubt that he would have (deservedly) gotten that big head shoved up his a$$.

Monte eats corn the long way.

So has the board quickly gone from taboo for journalists to their source of information on a slow news day?

It appears that it is kind of hard to avoid caring what the UM mascot does when he does it in the MSU arena and does it to the point of getting booted. Nice attempt to try to put down the MSU folk for commenting on it, but I think we all see how this topic is quite germane to a message board relating to MSU athletics. If it took place at a non-MSU event, that would be another matter (and would be taking place on another board).

It is kind of freaky to see the message board quoted so often in the press.

Isn't that plagiarism? I know the only source of journalists around here are not capable of doing something remotely resembling a "Review of the Literature"....

This topic is like when the Patriots won the Super Bowl and at their celebration parade the fans were chanting Yankees suck. Monte is now getting as much weekly press in the Comical as the Bobcat football team gets during the season, maybe you should be thanking him for getting Champ some press finally. Monte's job is to entertain and try to be funny and fire up the crowd or irritate the opposite fans. If Monte was a jackass at the game he deserved the boot which he got. When was the last time Champ was accused of doing any entertaining or trying to be funny? I would take Monte's enthusiasm any day. Hopefully he doesn't act like a jackass again, but he is a college student and I know none of us were perfect in college. Those that were perfect I bet would make lousy mascots. Yeah yeah, he is representing his school, but so are all the athletes and everybody knows none of them are perfect. Congrats and enjoy the basketball wins, that's more important anyway.

I'm finding this to be quite interesting.....I wasn't at the game but for anyone who was there, was Monte really creating a dangerous situation for fans or whomever?

The job of a mascot is to fire a crowd up in a good way or give a little friendly ribbing to the opposing team and their fans. I'm trying to be objective here and though I wasn't at the game, it seems like things were blown out of proportion a little bit. Am I wrong for thinking this?

Were there legitimate situations where people could have been hurt because of the actions of Monte?

I'm not sure that analogy really holds up... unless the Yankees were actually at the Super Bowl and were, in fact, sucking on or near the field while there. Otherwise, we're talking apples and oranges.

There was a funny bit about Monte on the local abc nightly news here in bozeman. It showed monte doing some stuff and then hanging out with the reporter. Kinda amusing.

I would actually like it if Champ was creative enough to do the things that Monte did even if it did get him kicked out of a game.

Is there something honorable about stuffing the ballot box in a mascot contest? You friz sure seem to think it's pretty slick.

...it's almost time for this to head for the smack section. It's simply a fact that Cat Fans display much more self control and have a sense of decorum not found over the divide...for a school that prides itself in being obnoxious hosts, I can't wait to read the responses from those that actually make the drive to Eugene
