First of all as a YANKEE fan since 1951...This story humors me but also is a very sad state of what can happen to sports...,..I DO NOT like large, long term contracts.....

I somewhat remember a story about Enos "Country Boy" Slaughter and one of his yearly contract negotiations. Lets say last year he had hit .332, 35 home runs and 122 RBI's.....This year he hit only .303, 23 home runs and 107 RBI's.....He goes into the GM and the GM kindly says no raise because this year your numbers were down.....
It seems with this present system there are NO repercussions to todays athletes and being totally motivated.....
Just my 2 cents worth.....I felt bad for Francona. He may have been employed by the Sox but I think he was a good manager.....
