Its a little surprising to me. From what I read, he didn't call Obama "Hitler", he said something about Obama and John Boehner are as different as Hitler and Netanyahu (sp). That might be a poor choice of an analogy, but doesn't seem derogatory.

There's a lot of other famous-type folks who should be thankful they didn't receive this same treatment during the Bush/Cheney years.

Probably didnt help his cause that he followed that comment up by saying "they're (Obama & Biden) the enemy" and that obama and biden are the three stooges.

Freedom of speech is protected, however companies are free to terminate you for saying stupid $hit.

Actually, his analogy was incredibly insulting to ALL (reasonable) AMERICANS, as we are proud to be a nation of people who can disagree without wanting to exterminate each other ... unlike the parties he used in his little analogy. We are also a people who tend to agree on about 90% of everything and run into our little political party cliques as defined by only small differences in the remaining 10%. For anyone to suggest that our President and our Speaker of the House should NOT be golfing together and trying to find common ground on the problems facing our country just proves that they don't know much about America and that they are the product of a very narrow-minded and backwards ideology that WANTS us to be as moronic and divided as a Hitler/Israel analogy would suggest.

He's clearly not a deep thinker and is willing to spout off incredibly stupid thoughts that fly into his head, and it's completely understandable that ESPN wouldn't want somebody like that representing their brand.

There's a simple rule that everyone should follow -- only reference Hitler when you are talking about Hitler. Virtually any other reference of Hitler (all almost always when talking about other Americans) is going to make you look like a fool.

So for those of you who think this was an appropriate analogy, pretend that some left-wing wacko had said the same thing about Bush and Pelosi getting together to try to solve some problems facing our nation. Yeah ... that analogy sounds pretty stupid now, doesn't it?

Dixie Chicks.

Although what they said was actually only critical of Bush and wasn't insulting of our entire nation like HWJ.

Ehh. Kinda. But i dont remember the Dixie chicks getting banned or kicked off of anything (but I could be wrong here). They simply tanked because they forgot who their fanbase was, before opening their mouths, and lost their popularity. Different situation IMO.

They were proactively dropped from almost every country radio station in the nation. Why? Because those radio stations like to make money, and they didn't think that carrying the Dixie Chicks on their stations was good for their image (which directly drives their ability to make money from advertisers), so they dropped them.

It's really hard to even make up a scenario that more closely reflects what ESPN did.

HWJ hasn't been "banned" from anything. He just got fired.

I'd disagree with this. The Dixie chicks were performing abroad (England maybe? Or somewhere in Europe) which absolutely was an insult to our country.

The "overseas" argument would make a lot more sense to me if it was applied consistently ... which it never seems to be. It's as if somebody just made it up to justify crucifying the Dixie Chicks, and then never applied again to anyone else who criticized the President while overseas, including lots of Republicans who have criticized Obama while overseas.

In my America, neither the Speaker of the House nor the President of the United States should be compared to Hitler and our two party system of government should not be likened to the Nazi genocide of the Jewish people. I suspect that if a left-winger had said this exact same thing during the Bush administration, you would suddenly find yourself living in my America.

HW made a statement about the difference between Obama and Boehner being as big as the difference between Hitler and Netanyahu (sp). Then you posted about how all americans should be able to disagree without wanting to exterminate each other. Sorry but this doesn't make any sense. You're taking his comments waaaaay out of context.

I'm not aware of any other context for a comment involving Hitler and his relationship with Jews.

I am totally willing to agree that HWJ was perhaps not smart enough or sophisticated enough to understand the context of his own statement and realize how amazingly off-base it was, but that doesn't make the comment itself any less offensive to every reasonable American.

Nobody that I know would accept a premise that Republicans are to Democrats what Hitler was to Jews or visa versa. They would all take offense, as Americans, to any comment that made that suggestion.
