First he chooses Fisher over Young, then he misses out on the chance to get some sort of draft compensation for Fisher to another team

I was listening to ESPN radio the other day, and they were talking about how Fisher's results don't really match his reputation. The Titans have only been to the playoffs something like six times in 16 seasons under him, and have won zero playoff games except for the year they went to the Super Bowl. Count me among those who have been duped by his reputation, because I was shocked to learn that his record was that bad.

not totally true. they beat the steelers in '02 and the ravens in '03. but i get the gist of what you're saying.

Sorry if my facts were not 100% accurate. I was just going on memory from what I'd heard on the radio a couple of weeks ago, and didn't actually look any of this up. But yeah, before I heard that I was sort of thinking that the Titans had been in the playoffs virtually every season, and was really surprised to find out that his record has not really been that great.

Well, consider the division in which the Titans play, though. You're not going to win a ton of division titles or playoff games when you have Peyton and the Colts at the height of their success playing in your division. Fisher's teams win consistently, he does things the right way and with class, and his players love him. That alone sets him apart from all but a few NFL head coaches.

Yeah, but only 6 playoff berths in 16 seasons (again I'm not sure that's exactly right, but it's pretty close)? The ESPN hosts weren't necessarily saying that Fisher is a terrrible coach, but only that perception doesn't really match reality for him. Before hearing his actual record, I would have guessed that he had made the playoffs maybe 10-12 times in 16 seasons, and I'll bet a lot of NFL fans would be surprised by this.

You have to take this with a grain of salt. How many max contracts do a mid level Nashvile team pay out? How many guys do they lose to big contracts? How much does Bud Adams really spend to make the playoff every year. Even Pittsburgh will pay Max money for the right player. I'm not sure TN will. Is Fisher still around if they had the 3rd pick when Eli/Ben/Phillip came out vrs when Vince/Matt/Cuttler came out.
