Ochocinco fined...Should Lebron be fined, too?

Post by Billings Cat » Tue Dec 08, 2009 8:03 pm

from espnThe NFL fined Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco $30,000 for wearing a sombrero after he scored a touchdown during Sunday's win over Detroit, according to an NFL source.
In a letter the NFL sent this week to Ochocinco, the league wrote, "During the second quarter of the Bengals qame, you were observed gesturing for, and then wearing, a decorative poncho and sombrero in the bench area. ...
"Compounding your violation is the fact that your actions were premeditated and deliberate. Prior to the game on your publicly accessible Twitter account, you posted the following: '@adam_schefter what I've planned for today will get me fined when I score but it's so worth it.' "
Ochocinco was fined $20,000 last month for conduct "unbecoming an NFL player" after he flashed a dollar bill at an official during a replay challenge in what he jokingly referred to as a "bribe."

I know it's a different sport, but for consistency, I’d personally like to see Lebron James fined for his clown show during the Cavaliers-Bulls game the other night. I’ve never seen an elite player in the NBA go that far before. I can't imagine Kobe, Carmello, K.G., CP3, D. Wade, or pretty much anyone who's "the man" for their team acting like such an idiot. It's just too bad that a lousy player like Noah was the only one to call him out during the game. Is it any wonder the Bulls are awful? And it wasn’t like he did it once, he kept going and going at it during multiple timouts like he was on drugs or something! If he did it once, it would be light-hearted, but he ended up just looking like a clown.

Not sure what there is to elaborate. If you saw Lebron on Sportscenter acting the fool during timeouts and dance while play was actually going on, it would be crystal clear.

What is to elaborate on is some of us didn't see any of the highlights and have no clue what LeBron did.

it was nothing. little dancing after a play. bulls didn't like it, so he did it again after another play. while shooting a free throw joakim noah was on the bench and had something to say to him about it. lebron walked over towards the bull bench and had some words for noah. no one here knows anything about it because it was not even the slightest issue. like jon barry and mark jackson said last night, "if you don't like a guy dancing and celebrating...stop him from scoring." i have yet to see a guy celebrate a missed shot, or a personal foul. it's a game. huys have fun. if you don't like it, stop him, or at the very least do what they used to do in hoops, and lay his ass out on his next drive. although, i don't think that would do anything but make lebron mad, he'd go off for an additional 20 points, and dance all the way to the lockerroom!

So let me get this straight ... while getting paid millions of dollars to participate in a business whose sole purpose is to drive revenue by providing entertainment to people on TV and in the arena, a player celebrated a successful play by dancing?

Sounds entertaining ... consistent with the mission of the entire business. My only question is, did he get a bonus for that? :D

pretty much bac. they dance in the lockerroom. they dance during introductions. he and rookie danny green from unc last year have a battle of sorts this season as far as their dancing goes. i saw it in another game this year too, and in this clip you can see he and danny having a dance-off. really not much there in my humble opinion, and to billingscat, if you haven't seen kobe, carmello, or wade, or any other superstar do this same sort of thing, you aren't watching enough. the nba isn't for everybody for this reason, but more times than not it's just for fun. if the bulls don't like it, don't get blown out, and don't give the other team a reason to dance.

I agree.

So that brings us back to "Ochocinco".......I think the NFL is going a little too far with their fines. I mean, 30k for wearing a sombrero on the sidelines? Like you said, this is entertainment and the fans enjoy it so what is the problem?

i think it all has to do with money and ratings. let's face it, the money means nothing to ocho. if the nfl just chose to do nothing, i don't think his antics would get as much attention. but when they start fining him $20,000-$30,000 that gets attention. personally i love seeing what he's gonna come up with next. that said, i'm flying out tomorrow to watch the vikes rebound and beat the living piss out of the bengals, so i really am hoping i don't witness any of these first hand! but next week i'm all about seeing what he comes up with! :D

I agree ... I see no problem there, either. I guess it just comes down to these two different companies adopting different sets of business practices.

Not to mention the Mexican fan base may feel targeted and we wouldnt want that.

I don't think he should be fined, but I do think he was being a jackass. I also thought the announcers were fools for making it out to only be Noah's fault. I'm glad somebody said something to James, but I don't think Noah should ever be the one criticizing someone for trying to draw attention to themselves - especially after what he did at the draft.
