MT High school wrestling
Any takers out there for some discussion?
High school wrestlers who have signed already:
Stroh, Chinook, has verballed to Wyoming
Shelton and Cathey, Skyview, have both verballed to NDSU
Anybody else?
Top ranked MT kids:
Saw a list on the Gazette's blog page that someone had taken the time to compile. But, I am now locked out (free 30day deal has expired) and too lazy to do another one.
Intermat has rankings. Zeiger is 19th at 138#; Ben Stroh is #8 at 195# (these are all-class rankings, MT has more kids ranked in the specific class categories)
Kids I'm looking forward to watching:
Entire Bozeman Hawks team
Berrett Stanghill
Kramer from Laurel
Zeiger
Mendenhall
Morin
Cathey
Shelton
Stroh
???
Who wins the team titles this year in the different classes?
Anybody educated enough to place a guess on an all-class team?

Re: MT High school wrestling
I would love to talk wrestling. I am nowhere near as up on things as Barechest.
Stroh is a beast. I heard also he chose Wyoming because of his brother but was getting a lot of interest from the powerhouse teams.
My kid will be wrestling in the AA Heavyweight class this year. A little undersized at 230 but in pretty good shape and is very strong. CMR will be improved as a team. Only lost 3 seniors last year and the Freshman class has some kids that will be competitive right away. GFH will be good but probably not as tough as they have been the last couple of years.

AA- I think that Skyview and Flathead return the most placers from a year ago. They are probably the favorites going in.
A- I have no idea.
B - Glasgow is real young (Zeiger goes for his fourth title this year). Forsyth still has a bunch of returners. Are they the favorites?
C - Anybody gonna challenge Chinook?

When CMR played HHS in the football playoffs, Tucker Erickson did not play. I think he was hurt. Anyone know how bad and if he will wrestle this year?

Re: MT High school wrestling
Erickson was back for the playoffs, will be interesting to see how his knee's hold up with wrestling though.
For AA I think Skyview will win it. Returned a lot of talent and I think they have the depth to make a run. I believe that there are quite a few guys going for a 3/4 time this year so it should be a lot of fun to watch. Will be able to talk a lot more about it as the season gets going since I didn't follow the season much last year.
One thing is for certain though, I can not wait for state to be back at the Metra! Went to AA in GF last year and of course it was fun, but nowhere near the intensity that it was at in Billings. Should be a lot of fun and a just hope for a fun season

I was curious because he did not play in the first playoff game against CMR. First matches start Friday.Air Force Cat wrote:Erickson was back for the playoffs, will be interesting to see how his knee's hold up with wrestling though.

When I was in Livingston, 70's and early 80's, I was involved in the boosters and really enjoyed watching the wrestling. VERY good sport and the MT schools always turn out some real BEASTS.....

Mendenhall and Zeiger wrestled each other twice in Havre. Zeiger won during the round robing seeding portion. Mendenhall during the regular tourney portion. Those matches were epic.
Stroh from Chinook is a freak.
GFH is tough in the lower weight classes.

Re: MT High school wrestling
Would have loved to watch both Zeiger/Mendenhall matchups. That is marquee stuff right there! Both have Division I talent.
Stroh will be very hard pressed to find anybody to break a sweat with this year. Wyoming really stole one there, imo.
Bozeman wrestled GFH last night in a dual. GFH won 53-21. If GFH has any depth this year, they will vie for the team title. They definitely have the star power that will score lots of points.

Re: MT High school wrestling
Went to the CMR Holiday Classic last weekend. It was my first time attending. Let me just say how impressed I was with the level of competition. This is the closest thing Montana has to a single classification state championship. 46 teams were in attendance. Some highlights:
1) 152# weight class was loaded! Hinebauch (3xA finalist, 1x state champion); Shelton (3xAA finalist, 1x state champion); Tommy Cooper (unknown how many time finalist, but is a state champion I believe); Dallen Brauer (3xB/C finalist, 2x state champion. Those were the 1-4 seeds. Semifinals and finals were terrific showdowns.
2) Zeiger vs Mendenhall verision 3. Kudos to these two for not changing weight classes and being willing to lay it on the line. Both wrestlers gave an outstanding performance during their match. They are amazing wrestlers! Zeiger won a very tight 7-6 battle with a late 2-point nearfall on a tilt. Both of these young men are sources of inspiration for their dedication to the sport and the level to which they have risen.
3) I missed it, but I heard that Schlosser and Schroeck at 119# gave an oustanding performance as well with several very good scrambles throughout and an extended action packed one at the very end of the match with Schlosser scoring a takedown at the buzzer to win the match.

They are together for individual championships. However, they are separated for team titles. Chinook has won the C title the last couple of years.CatsFBfan wrote:B and C are together as a class in wrestling.barechestcat wrote:AA- I think that Skyview and Flathead return the most placers from a year ago. I would put money on Corvallis winning it all in A. They have been strong up to this point, taking the Western Montana Duals this past weekend in Ronan.barechestcat wrote:AA- I think that Skyview and Flathead return the most placers from a year ago. They are probably the favorites going in.

I wouldn't overlook Havre or any of the other traditional A powerhouses, but if Corvallis can stay healthy they will most likely win the title.

Laurel's my pick at this point. With Kramer back, and if he stays healthy, they have the possibility of 4-5 guys going real deep and probably at least three making the finals (Kukes, 135; Cooper, 152; Kramer, 171)TboneCat wrote:I would put money on Corvallis winning it all in A. The 6-foot, 255-pound Erickson is currently undefeated at 23-0 with 20 pins.
He has stapled every AA opponent he’s faced this year, with his only decisions coming against the No. 1-ranked Class A and B/C wrestlers.
Retiring my moniker. It's time to ride off into the sunset. It's been a fun ride. Go Cats.

Re: MT High school wrestling
The seeding tournaments are all wrapped up and all that waits now is a highly anticipated state tournament this weekend in Billings. What are the big surprises of the year and who do you have winning at each level?
My big surprise I would say is Helena High matching Skyview for the most wrestlers at state with 23, don't think that has ever happened. With that many at state and Glacier only qualifying 18 there could be some interesting twists and upsets along the way.
For champions I am going to go:
AA - GFH (I have seen Skyview choke way too many times but it will be close)
A - Laurel with the repeat (Havre/Sidney could surprise though)
B/C - Forsyth (don't think it will even be close)
Should be a great tournament. 4 kids going for a 4x and a couple others trying to keep their streak alive. Travel safe and good luck to everyone!

Re: MT High school wrestling
I haven't kept up with much but class A this season, and only on the Western part of the state
I think Corvallis is going to be a tough out, I don't think they have lost a dual to a class A team and have represented well in all the large tournaments they attended, and from what you are saying it will probably be Corvallis and Laurel battling for the title.
I think Frenchtown could make some noise, even though as a team they took 3rd in the Northwestern A Divisional they bring a full slate of 16 kids to state, the most from that division.
