Chicken Toss at K-State

Post by MTBobcatFan » Wed Feb 28, 2007 5:46 pm

I found this article unusual. Blame it on PETA for ruining the fun, again.

I'm not sure how crazy I am about smuggling in a grizzly into next year's Cat/Griz bball game.

http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/6516612

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The chicken toss has been declared off limits at Kansas State.

For years, Kansas State students have smuggled live chickens into basketball games against Kansas, then thrown them onto the court and behind the opposing bench before tip-off — mocking their rival's Jayhawk mascot.
But an animal rights group objected to the mistreatment of chickens, and the school issued an open letter to fans this week calling for an end to the practice.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals responded to the latest incident during a game Feb. 19 by sending a letter to university president Jon Wefald, claiming at least three chickens were thrown on the court during player introductions.

The letter described chickens as "very intelligent and inquisitive animals" that appeared to have been subjected to "deafening noise, bright lights, terror, abusive handling and likely death for the sake of amusement."

Kansas State had said it would not comment on the complaint, but the athletic department issued a statement Tuesday saying it considers live, non-service animals "contraband." Any fans caught with animals or caught throwing any object onto a playing surface will be ejected from the game and could face prosecution.

"These actions severely tarnish the image of our University, its athletics teams and the majority of our outstanding fans and supporters and while viewed by many as harmless pranks, these acts are likely illegal," the letter said.

Said PETA director Debbie Leahy: "Any student who throws live birds on a basketball court should be thrown out of school."

The Jayhawks beat Kansas State 71-62 in the last meeting, running their overall winning streak in Manhattan to 24 games.

While I am far from giving a rat's ass about the emotional well-being of chickens (I just like to eat them), it does seem like a pretty stupid tradition on the part of K-State (I'll have to ask my old roommate about this one).

Isn't it kind of weird to carry a live chicken around campus and into a basketball game ... especially after the "Chicken Lover" South Park episode?

It also seems like it might be a little unsafe for the humans in the general area of where the chicken lands. I'm not sure I want a freaked out chicken coming too close to my eyes at any point. You'd think that alone would have put this practice officially off-limits some time agou.

Basically anything PETA is for, I'm against, so I say let the chickens stay.
And it's going to be a sad day when people start basing daily decisions on episodes of South Park.

Ummm, okay. Almost as sad as the day people start advocating smuggling live chickens into a basketball game based soley on the fact that somebody else doesn't advocate it?

If PETA refused to jump off a cliff, I assume you would?

99% of PETA's policies are garbage. And their ways of getting in the news are also garbage.

At least they have a tradition at their games. What do we do? Chant eat sh!it Grizzlies at games where we aren't even playing the Griz.

And if I had to jump off a cliff, I would bring a parachute, duh.

I attended DumB in the late 70's (before I came to my senses, I was going to be a pharmacist, so Dumb seemed like the logical school). The student section was always packed, you got to the fieldhouse by 6 to get a seat in the student section. We threw paper airplanes when Air Force visited, potatoes for Idaho and ISU, and pinecones for NAU. Thats the ones I remember. It was always done during player introductions. If I remember correctly the administration got a little upset and the fun was stopped. Of course this was all before the PC era of today.

"Can we bring back the tortillas at cat griz?"

I think that tortillas are smarter than chickens.

And they don't throw as much of a fit when you're trying to smuggle them into a game

I also remember when people would throw themselves on the court at UM...and the security guards would drag them off by their hair. I always loved that one.
