Interesting Hauck quote

Post by crazycat » Wed Jan 17, 2007 9:46 am

"We will not take a JC or drop-down quarterback," Hauck said firmly. "We don't have the room. The numbers are too small."
He just seems to word things awkwardly. You can take this to mean a couple different things.

I know the griz are real tight with scholarships this year. I have a little insider knowledge of what goes on with the griz, I am willing to bet we see Jason Washington start. (He started in 2005 but hurt his shoulder)He took a grey shirt last year and his back up will be Cole Burquist going into spring ball.

Here are their 4 QB's.

16 Stapp, Clint FR QB 6' 3" 217.2 lbs. Niwot, CO
07 Washington, Jason SR QB 6' 2" 200.0 lbs. Oakland, CA
12 Selle, Andrew FR QB 6' 2" 205.0 lbs. Billings, MT
14 Bergquist, Cole SO QB 6' 2" 207.4 lbs. San Clemente, CA

That's interesting StreetCat. But when you think about it, it wouldn't be too surprising. Washington has had a year to just study the system to go along with a year of partial playing time. Because of the complicated system they run i don't expect to see Stapp, Selle or Larson as the starter. So either Bergquist or Washington, maybe Stapp. With this system you almost have to have 2 years of learning time before stepping on the field.

I would be amazed if Washington came in ahead of Bergquist in Spring drills. Cole was pretty solid when he played this past year in spot duty. Washington was not good at all when he started. Now, that may be due to not knowing the system well. But, I thought I'd heard he was being moved to receiver or something.

Time will tell I guess. :)

I just checked their roster and he is still listed as a QB.

You all need to keep in mind this is Hauck he will play his recruits over others. He working real hard to get Jason here from B. Green. From my understaning Washington has improved a considerable amount since the last time anyone saw him play.

The thing that had me scratching my head was that he seems to be saying he's not happy with the QBs, but doesn't have the schols to bring someone else in.

I kind of red it that way too, I have heard that the Griz are pretty high the potential of Stapp and Selle.

Was Edwards the last non D-1/JC QB to start an entire season. This might be a trend they want to stop. -I know Bequist Started some off and on, but he was never really accepted as the "Griz Starting QB" more like a place holder until someone else came along.

Washington used a Grey Shirt last year? Doesn't make a lot of sense, Grey shirt is only available for the first year (before they ever start College football). Would have to be a Red Shirt or Medical Red Shirt.

I guess just a term thing, he has one more year is the bottom line.

As far as Bobby saying no room and a numbers thing. With 64 Scholarships, and 3 or 4 already taken for QB, you can't go out and get a 5th QB on scholarship. There is just no room in the allotment of the 64 for 5 QBs (especially having to bring one in with two years left in their eligibility.) You would have to let 1 or 2 go (drop them from scholarships) or ??

As far as saying it takes two years to learn their system, translation is they are really saying Washington isn't as quick at learning as Swogger (who did pick it up in one year and played fairly well).

Finally, isn't Cole a Junior? He lost the MSU/UM game in 2005, and played some in 2006, so 2007 makes him a Junior.

Yes, Cole is a junior. Washington used a medical red shirt this year and took the time to become one of the most respected Griz players in Missoula with his Griz Kids type foundation that helps terminally ill Griz fans (children) go to games and meat the players. Whatever role he does play on the team, he will be much more of a fan favorite for all he has done. It is interesting to me that he wasn't even mentioned in the article. I guess I would say that I would be surprised if he started, but I don't know how his rehab has went and I don't know what he learned observing the system this year. It will be interesting to see how it all sorts out but I would say that they are all Hauck's recruits at this point. He worked hard to get Washington but he also recruited Cole, Stapp, Selle and Larson right out of high school so either way one of his recruits will start at QB. I personally am a big fan of Washington as a person and he is the type of person that is good for college football. But I would like to get back to someone we recruited out of high school and was allowed to grow in our system. Otherwise potential QB recruits are going to start being warry of signing here.

He will have had to make a significant improvement to jump ahead of CB on the depth chart. I cetainly thought he was a sub par BSC QB everytime I saw him play.

The title of this thread is very misleading. I don't think that bed-wetter has ever said anything interesting.

Before anyone else can say it, I will.

Interesting comment by Hauck, and obviously not exactly true. I agree they won't be recruiting a QB this year, but if Brady Leaf called Hauck today he would fly to Oregon in a split second...

No one would fly there.

Obvious reason is Leaf is a Red-shirt Senior. Ineligible to transfer to a I-AA program and play.

That is great to hear about him. I had heard other things when he was first there and good to see they are not true. When a guy is hurt, it's easy not to be involved. Good to hear about good things in sports.

Thumbs up for Washington.

More recently there was also an article on Jason Washington and what he was doing this Monday for MLK, http://missoulian.com/articles/2007/01/ ... news01.txt

Jason is probably the most civic-minded player on the team, and I'm amazed that he gives back so much even after how much s**t he had to deal with for the 1st half of 2005 (pre-injury).

I personally think Jason has a steep hill to climb to move ahead of Cole Berquist, Cole has more starts in this system than Jason and also played 1 full game and 2 or 3 mop-up games in 2006 while Jason was out. I expect that JW will get the opportunity to compete for the starting QB spot but if Cole beats him out look for him to possibly shift to playing WR.
