Hustad commits to Griz football

By TOM COTTON, Helena Independent Record Sports Editor - 12/22/06

For the second time in two days, the University of Montana football team has landed a Helena High product.

Lineman Matt Hustad, 6-foot-5, 250 pounds verbally committed to the Grizzlies Thursday, joining Bengal linebacker Ryan Fetherston, who committed on Wednesday.

“I think athletically his top end is so high,” said Helena High coach Tony Arntson. “Once he gets into the weight room and boils down to one sport, he has the opportunity to be an outstanding player for the Griz.”

Fetherston is expected to redshirt next season and will likely play either defensive end or outside linebacker.

Hustad was an honorable mention all-state pick as a sophomore. Injuries cut short his junior season to four games, however he rebounded his senior season to be an honorable mention all-state pick as a defensive lineman. He was a first-team selection as an offensive lineman.

He was touted by the Web site www.cnnsi.com this season as the best prep prospect in Montana.

Hustad played basketball his first three years at Helena High. He was also a member of the Helena Senators American Legion baseball team.

“It’s just a winning program,” he said. “I really fit in well with the city (of Missoula). I know a bunch of people there and they have a good physical therapy program.”

Hustad was pursued by Division I programs in Idaho, Wyoming as well as Oregon, Oregon State and Washington.

Arntson said that he is slated to play on the defensive line for UM. Hustad said that UM coach Bobby Hauck said he may see some playing time next season as a true freshman.

“I am really excited about that (playing defense),” Hustad said. “I think I can contribute the most on the defensive side of the ball.”

Hustad and Fetherston join fellow Helena High alumni Dan Carpenter and Mike Ferriter on the team.
