Who's the Best Directional College/University

I was wondering what everyone’s thoughts were about who has the best Division I directional school (i.e. Eastern Washington, Northern Colorado, etc) in the country. I bring this question up, because quite frankly I can’t think of too many that dominate Division I athletics. The best school I could come up with was Northern Iowa; traditionally they have a good football team (made the 1-AA finals last season), very good wrestling team, and last year they were a #10 seed in the NCAA Men’s BB tournament and was ranked #24 in the AP polls for a short period. Who is better or as good?

I suppose the University of Southern California is kind of cheating (as it is private), but that would be my horse if it qualifies.

We are not counting directional states. If you would have said East Carolina University, I would give it to you.

We won't give that one to you- you must come up with a different answer.

I agree University of Northern Iowa has great programs. They have probably produced more NFL players than any other D-1AA schools.

How about Southern Methodist University (before the death penalty)?
I'd take Southern Miss over Northern Iowa. One could make a case that Southern Miss. has done more than either of the non-directional counterparts over the past 20 years.

Well, I don't know about Div I, but I think that after MSU-Northern beats Carroll this weekend they will be the best NAIA directional school.

Good topic!
Yeah, Southern California...if they qualify.
How about Northwestern (two directions for the price of one!).
How about this. Is it better to be North? or Northern? i.e. North Texas, or Northern Arizona?
I think Louisiana had them all covered until a few name changes. What is there...NW Louisiana, SW Lousiana, NE Louisiana. And what was that school that the Waterboy played for (Adam Sandler movie)?

Hey now, I can actually see where Swill is coming from with this one. (Shocking, I know

) Even though it is not a directional school, UM has had recent success in MBB, WBB, FB (duh), and has an excellent VB coach....

Do you find kmax and I's rants entertaining and just want to see if we will bite again? Unfortunately I am too excited for tomorrow to even go there and Bay Area Cat's post may have to be the first entry into the BobcatNation Hall of Fame.

I didn't realize they had added a direction to their school name which would by the very nature of the topic title and original poster's question exclude them from this conversation.

I know they're having a down year, but I'd have to go with Georgia Southern over those that have been mentioned. Northern Iowa might have more guys in the pros, but Ga. Southern has six national titles, and they didn't even have a football team until like 1982.
EDIT: Maybe Southern Miss, too; I didn't think about them. To me, though, USC doesn't qualify. They are a private school, and when I think of "directional" schools, I think of state schools that are secondary to their state's flagship universities...the fact that USC happens to have the word "Southern" in their name doesn't make them a directional school, IMO. Same with Northwestern, et al, for the same reason.

South Florida's been pretty good of late. Maybe not so much this year but they've accomplished a lot over the last five or so.
I'm with the mod on Southern Cal, though.
