The early 70s MSU dropped baseball and wrestling--well before Title IX really had much of an impact on the overall athletic budget. One thing I notice about OSUs roster is the number of kids playing versus the total scholarships available for this sport (I think it's only like seven). Several of these "nonrevenue" sports attract athletes who play just for the love of the game and I frequently get more than a little upset when I look at all small school such as Eastern putting such a drain on our poor Board of Regents limited resources

Guess I'm just curious as to why there's such a huge disconnect in the number of sports we have compared to what we used to sponsor (obviously baseball, wrestling and our greatest teams before rodeo--rifle come to mind) and the caliber of schools we now play in both football and basketball has me upset this morning. I mean, I hate to point out that even that place 202 miles to west used to be in the same conference as most of the PAC 10 schools

I would hope after the state somehow fixes the severe shortage in the state Teacher Retirement Fund and the State Employee Retirement Fund (both mismanaged by D.A. Davidson and their predominately Fizzlie graduates) as we come to the realization not all of the 500 million (and growing) budget surplus is derived from oil and gas revenues, Brian takes a good, hard look at who he has managing the school trust land with him and starts keeping many of these kids from Montana home for college and after graduation--best place to start because he has more than a little money disappearing here. It's just that I really don't want to see all my own kids forced to move elsewhere to play collegiate sports and work in their fields upon graduation from college (maybe a couple of them because they still think they know everything ) I mean, if they want, they can go to Washington and be a part of the WAMI program for all I care Lord, it burns me up to see us with a little over 900k with; 450 school districts, and six member institutions of the university system (duplicating degrees) and we're degrading our own kids making statements such as "he'd be a good Frontier Conference player" knowing we're sending some of our better minds and talents out-of-state continually with little or no hope of ever seeing them return.

Sorry for the things I'm upset about this morning, but it's still frustrating to observe what goes on still, and that's seeing all of our best and brightest leaving the state in droves while we're stuck with...Like Jimmy Buffet says: "I need to go fishing..."

Off topic but wrestling wasn't dropped until the late 80's.

Ya, I knew some wrestler whem I was in school in the early to mid 80's

And I was on the Bobcat baseball team as a second year scoli when it was dropped! Sad time... hope some day it will be revived as university sport.

I remember there were some rumblings a few years ago about this very subject. While baseball is a wonderful sport, the season starts in February, not exactly baseball weather here in Bozeman, Montana. I remember when Judy Martz was governor and she pushed this idea of adding wrestling and women's soccer (which everyone else in the Big Sky has) and the only real thing blocking that was money. If the athletics department was to ever find money like that, I think there's a good chance wrestling and women's soccer would be added.

Pretty neat to watch your kids do something like this.

Yeah, I don't see baseball as a sport to be soon added simply because of weather issues, they would have to travel lots, and bottom line is it would not bring near enough revenue to offset the expenses. It is a great sport and MSU Billings seems to really get into it.... but they have COBB Field to attract crowds. Miles Community College and Dawson Community College also have pretty solid programs.
