Yeah, they are not getting some sweet media deal without a conference...MSU01 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 11, 2025 11:02 amHe's not wrong. But the "JV League" still has some great players and teams and is a lot of fun to follow for those of us who are fans of those teams. I'm sure the major media networks will be falling over themselves to offer Sac State big money TV deals for their cobbled together independent schedule against the San Jose States and Sam Houstons of the FBS.
If SSU commits the resources they need to compete I think they will be fine. Pretty sure they have had 3 P4 wins as well as other FBS wins in the last 15 or so years. Not sure of any other FCS teams that have had as good of success. UCD is right behind them.
If...they commit resources. SAC is going to need a big influx of cash for infrastructure improvements, not to mention that NIL money that was supposedly offered to them earlier. They haven't had much committed in the way of resources in their history up til now. They've had three pretty good years winning the conference and they've had two coaches in their entire history that have had winning records at the program. Good luck moving up to FBS independent. One positive is they do have a good amount of students and if they can increase those fees, that will help. However, no conference, TV contract, and that many fans (mens and women basketball attendance is pathetic and 14,000 per game in football will diminish with losing), yet. Their work is certainly cut out for them now. Scheduling enough FBS games alone will be an issue.seataccat wrote: ↑Sat Apr 12, 2025 11:45 amIf SSU commits the resources they need to compete I think they will be fine. Imagine trying to find 11 or 12 teams to play every year when they aren’t in a conference. Costello says just working up three or four non-conference games is hard. Sac is going to have a scheduling nightmare. I guess they could do some home and home games with other independent schools. I know they are hoping for a PAC (?) invite but will probably settle for the MW. If they manage to get a bowl game someday, they will get to keep the whole payout since they aren’t in a Conference. Of course, they will need to win enough games first.Montanabob wrote: ↑Sat Apr 12, 2025 3:12 pm"Their work is certainly cut out for them now. Scheduling enough FBS games alone will be an issue."
probably not that bad. pay an FCS team $300k or schedule Suc State for free.
Unfortunately for Sac State scheduling other independents to play the problem is that there are currently only two of them (Notre Dame and UConn), and it's hard to see the former cancelling their long-standing rivalries with USC and Stanford to play Sac State instead. I'd guess they're banking on being able to play a bunch of Pac-12 and MWC opponents if both of those conferences start out with the minimum of 8 football members.AFCAT wrote: ↑Sat Apr 12, 2025 8:07 pmImagine trying to find 11 or 12 teams to play every year when they aren’t in a conference. Never wanted them in. Let’s jettison Davis and PSU, too, while we’re at it. Bad things come in threes.Bobcat4Ever wrote: ↑Sat Apr 12, 2025 1:27 amThe next council of president’s meeting should be a real joy. I wish Waded can still make it.
I’ve wanted to kick them out for a long time. Why wait — it’s almost summer. Good riddance.
Unfortunately Cal Poly should go too, by those rules. I thought it was a really lousy thing to pick up two football-only schools. The conference needs 10 schools to play 3+9 when the FCS is allowed to play a 12-game season.nevadacat wrote: ↑Sun Apr 13, 2025 6:26 pmNever wanted them in.
