Broke back Mountain , Broke back Mountain

Post by mslacat » Mon Feb 13, 2006 1:32 pm

During the Gonzaga / Stanford game the, Gonzaga crowds chanted Broke back Mountain , Broke back Mountain when ever a certain Stanford player had the ball. Is this the same as chanting the "N word" when ever a afro-american player got the ball, or "redskin" if an native-american had the ball?

only if it was an undeniable fact that every player they chanted it as is gay, otherwise it's just a smartassed attempt to get the players to lose concentration. It's an inference not a fact

Yeah that is pretty rude, but unless the player was in fact gay I would say it is just a standard way for college kids to get in their head.

With that being said, how about the atmosphere in the Kennel. I can't pull myselft to cheer for Gonzaga, but the energy of their crowd rivals that of the ACC schools. I hope we see something like that at MSU someday!

This was discussed quite a bit on ESPN Radio today while I was on lunch break. Collin convinced me that the chant wasn't offensive. If you get a chance to catch the Herd today, you should do so.

I don't think it is the same as N or Redskin (as both of those terms are offensive in themselves), but chanting a movie reference like that seems blatanly homophobic to me (essentially doing a chant to mock somebody for being gay). I assume their tone wasn't one of support for any gay people or sheep ranchers that happened to be listening?

I wasn't aware that a Stanford player was gay or rumored to be gay (or does he just put more effort into his appearance than Jr. High 'stache boy Morrison?). I guess I'm out of the loop on this one.

This will shed some more light on the subject.

Ah, thanks. I understand now. Just your garden variety "suggesting someone is gay as an insult" sort of thing.

Seems lame to me, rude and distasteful, but I'm not in college. So, I'll leave it to the coeds to decide what's rude and what isn't in this case.

I listened to Herd this morning, too, and I thought his argument was completely ridiculous. Sure, the movie title was not introduced to society as derogatory, but the inference is undeniable.

If anything, Stanford should be made fun of for having the lamest mascot ever. Plus, who is the idiot that said, "our mascot is a tree, but our nickname is a color."

Montana State IS what "they" think Montana is.

I agree that the argument is ridiculous, but his arguments always are. Somehow he always gets me to buy in even though the argument is insane!

P.S. The mustache is LAME! Morrison looks like he could use a shower and a haircut!

The 'stache has only brought press his way. He is a marketing genius and has probably helped his draft status. He is a "hot head" though. I was at the Santa Clara game, 7 rows behind the bench, and he was a complete jackass to coaches and trainers. Few told him that he could sit down or go to the locker room- he did not enter the game again. Sweet player, hot head- but 'stache can stay as far as i'm concerned.

How can you hate Zaga? They may be a bit overrated, but the fact is they hung with UCONN, beat Michigan State, stayed with Memphis, beat Virginia, beat OK State, lost early to UW, beat St. Joe's and beat a much improved Stanford team. Say what you will, but Morrison is incredible and the Zags will make a run in the Tournament- I hope, at least, the Elite 8. You cannot hate Zaga- you are going to hell Swilly.

Morrison is a great player, but the 'stache makes him look like a used car salesman. In fact, he would have fit right in with the cast of "Anchorman"! :D

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

I agree with Swilly  I also can't stand the Zags. I grew up 4 hours away from there and always had an interest in them mainly due to John Stockton but then suddenly they start playing really well and EVERYONE within 10,000 miles is a huge Zags fan. Being that I can't stand bandwagon jumping I have developed a deep dislike for Gonzaga.

This year they are very talented and anything less than the elite 8 would be underachieving on their part. However I will be rooting against them every game! The only time I will cheer for Gonzaga is when they are playing Duke or the Griz.

You could call it that, but I always veer away from bandwagon teams. It is part of the reason I don't have a deep dislike for the Griz too. When you grow up in NW Montana that is all you hear about and it's always in your face. So it is easy to enjoy watching teams like that lose!

Gonzaga Bball = Boise State Football

At first they were cool, and fun to watch. Now the fans are so rediculously obnoxious that I root against them every chance I get.

Somewhat off the subject, but how many people out there are waiting for another March Madness where Gonzaga supposedly "gets the shaft" with rankings, and then blows it in one of the first 3 rounds?
