No more double icing the kicker and other rules around 1st down clock stoppage and penalties.

All three rule changes are in line with the NFL. I’m quite okay with that. I really like the prohibition of back-to-back-to-back timeouts. But all this begs the question, why have games been getting longer? College games, with I think pretty much the same set of rules, used to fit right into a 3-hour time slot. But they’ve gotten longer and longer — and I see nothing here to address the length of commercial/station breaks which I suspect explains a large part of the added minutes. Too bad to reduce the football and not touch the golden goose.

My guess as to why games have gotten longer are 1) more passing leads to more incompletions which stops the clock and 2) more passing generally leads to more big plays which leads to more TDs which result in more post-score game breaks. The rule change will help reduce the impact of the first one.

I like it, never really understood why the clock needed to stop on a first down with 11 minutes left in the first quarter.

I think it was about physically moving the chains.

Yes, especially when you have high tempo offenses.

At least the chain gang guys will have all summer to work on their agility and cardio! MSU will be moving the chains a lot again this year...

As someone that has done the chains at the HS level, usually the problem (at least here) is waiting on the ref to signal a first down or not, chains cant move until we get the signal. If you have a ref like we do here that waits to signal or forgets, its a problem. Usually college refs signal almost immediately so it shouldn't be much of a problem.

 Yeah, I watch the refs in a game to see when they signal the chain gang
