There should be assault charges filed and permanent suspension. This was well out of the aspect of the game.

my kid recently started playing hockey, so I've started to pay attention to the sport a little bit more. It's amazing how hockey regularly has fist fights and cheap shot as part of the game. In any other sport, the fighting athletes would be suspended/fined/kicked off the team.

There are protocols for fighting in hockey. Junior hockey seems to be the worst. There have been charges filed for cheap shots in hockey just like there should be in this case.

I've been wondering if the base runner might have been talking some nasty smack. If you watch a bit longer version of the video it shows that right after the runner passed 2nd base, the umpire who had just been standing between the pitching mound and 2nd base begins to walk toward the base runner with an out stretched arm seemingly motioning to him. Something must've been going on for that ump to do what he did. Whatever was going on, you just can't do what the pitcher did and not get reprimanded severely.

Hockey is the most frustrating, diabolically maddening game ever invented. They have to vent it out on the ice or they would become serial killers off it.

Golf for most professional hockey players is like a day at the beach, easy and effortless. For the rest of us it can be frustrating for sure.
Go try and play hockey sometime, you will find golf to be much less stressful and way better for your physical health.
NHL players also have fewer off ice issues than their peers in professional sports. What happens on the ice stays on the ice....
