Did anyone see that Sports Center had highlights from the game? That was the first time I have ever seen highlights from a 1-AA regular season game on Sports Center.

That alone seems to be a pretty compelling reason for schools to schedule Thursday night games. If it's a slow sports news day, you end up with a lot of exposure.
Having the World Series end after 4 games helps a lot as well. Lots of unplanned time available on all of the sports outlets right now.

Sports Center has Ivy League games on all the time.
