I think these salaries have been over inflated. Yes the S&C coach is very important however, unlike head coaches, there are a large number of good S&C coaches and most are used to working for a fraction of this amount. I think one school went crazy (Alabama) and the rest felt obliged to follow suit!

Because of the NCAA restrictions on the amount of time that can be spent on football activities, in many cases the S & C coach (and his staff) spends more time with a player than his position coach. Especially during the summer.

I think this is only the beginning. As usual, Alabama is on the cutting edge, but I predict that FB programs find more ways, and more creative ways to get the S & C Coach and his staff involved in player development.

Rocky Gullickson was the first S&C coach in the Big Sky, and its' no coincidence that two years after he came to Bozeman we won a National Championship in football -- the S&C program was a key component.

I know the S&C coach here at Utah and he has a great program, new facilities, and a full staff of 13 (many former NFL players for football). His base is around $255K and he gets all the bonuses the other football coaches get, so by winning the Pac12 South and the Vegas Bowl he got a real nice bonus (like twice the average annual salary for SLC). So his total comp is between the OC/DC and position coaches. He and his staff do spend as much time with players as any other coach does. They also travel with the team. Take a look at the facilities and you realize why the S&C coach who runs the place is compensated that way.

Easily one of the most important aspects of a college team. Arguably the second most important after a HC in college.
