According to a Western Front article, the conversation about the mascot — which has represented the university since 1923 — began last summer. Those supporting a change said the Viking is too masculine, too violent and doesn’t reflect students of color. They are advocating for a more inclusive mascot.

Western Washington Vikings
This has hit our news outlets lately. Apparently the Viking is now a controversial mascot

Re: Western Washington Vikings
I don't have any problems with the mascot (and I don't honestly understand some of their arguments for changing it -- the racial element in particular), but if the students of WWU want to work to get the mascot changed, that's fine. It's their school so they should be free to debate that as much as they want and even change it if they ultimately make that decision. It's no skin off my arse.
That said, I am firmly against people using social media to direct threats at any of the students who happen to be trying to get the mascot changed. That sort of behavior needs to be called out and corrected whenever it is seen.

Re: Western Washington Vikings
Ridiculous.....
I am a male proud of my Viking descent. I guess they could change it to a real masculine mascot, like the uc Santa Cruz banana slugs...
But SonomaCat pretty much said it correctly. I know I would never set foot there if I were an athlete.
