Not sure if this was one of the names actually suggested, or a bad copywriting/editing job of the story, but it made me laugh so hard my stomach hurt!

Members of the public submitted thousands of nickname ideas throughout April, ranging from the Abdominal Snowmen to the confusing Fighting Xiphactinus and everywhere in between.

I think the "Oilers" would be awesome. Just a little throwback tribute to the Houston Oilers

How about the North Dakota "Fighting for all political correctness". That will scare the hell out of opponents!

God that's so lame. What boring brand.
Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

Wonder if they did that to keep there mascot emblem? Or do they have to remove all suggestions of Native Americans? War Hawks would have sounded better.

They should have gone all the way to lame and called themselves the doves.

No.
I think you don't get it. Sleeping in until 6 won't get many people very far in life, especially if they want to play on Sunday.

How many other schools are ducks or beavers?
Hawks is the worst choice out of their finalists.
And the two mascots here in Oregon are anything but bad or boring as far as branding here. The merchandise is crazy and people eat it up. Even in Corvallis.

Was traveling through northern Minnesota and caught a high school football game on the radio. One of the teams was the mighty squirrels.
Ok I added the mighty.

At least they didn't decide to name their mascot the fighting cocks after Jacksonville State or South Carolina. College "brand" names morph into the absurd at times. I'm glad I never received any of my degrees from Morehead State, Ball State or a school with a nickname such as a duck, zip or beaver...but I do have a fondness for my graduate work at Jacksonville State...I can understand why this nickname appeals to their school.

I think my favorite Montana high school team nickname has to be the Nashua Porcupines.

Belfry Bats. Idaho would be Orofino Maniacs because of their state mental institution and women's prison.
