Shooter Benched

Post by Prodigal Cat » Sat Sep 26, 2015 8:12 pm

V A got benched against Utah. Oregon offense was pretty meh losing 20-6. Locke comes in and drives the field to make it 20-13. I realize he's hurt but might be the end of Vernon.

Wow - UO falling apart - 40-13 Utes.

Never have liked UO and I've always sort of rooted for the Utes, and you've got to root for their QB Wilson. He's had his fair share of injuries over the past few years. Hopefully they can hold onto this lead and win.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

Oregon is making Utah look like a final four team. Although Utah beat Michigan and Michigan thumped BYU today, maybe they are that good. Looking like the team to beat in the PAC 12 anyway.

Locke's back to back interceptions may have saved VAJ's job,

Last time Utah won in Eugene was 1994.

VA does have a broken finger on his throwing hand, probably at least part of the reason he's having a rough time.

Yep.

Lockie really has no business playing ahead of him anyway.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

A 5'10" 195lb QB struggles running the option against Pac-12 defenses.

I'm shocked. Shocked!

It was said before in other threads, but it really is amazing how horrible the QB situation was this season at Oregon. It looks like Lockie (who's not good) was their best guy back, and after him it was a walk-on. For a program of that caliber to not be loaded with QB depth is a head-scratcher ... who wouldn't want to take the reins of that offense? It would seem to be a pretty easy sell to top tier QB recruits. The fact that they had to go for Adams out of desperation really has to be frustrating for them.

And yeah, Adams is an awesome QB and more than holds his own at the Pac 12 level (and would have been a fine replacement for Mariota if he didn't have a broken finger). But the fact that they had to go out and poach a QB from an FCS school has to be seen a major fail in terms of their recruiting approach at QB.

I'm loving the Pac 12 this year -- I love to see fun chaos. Utah may well be the real deal -- I hope to see them win the south (and perhaps even be "the team" from the Pac 12 this year). I'm also loving what Stanford and Cal are doing, especially on offense. Cal is just fun to watch, and Stanford has a great stable of running backs that could make some noise. If one of them won the north, it would make for a crazy season.

This makes me happy and concerned. I'm happy because the FCS stud QB moving up will be less likely and that diminishes the small odds of Dakota leaving to 0%. I'm concerned because it is obvious that Oregon needs a QB and they will probably offer more QB recruits then they normally would. This includes Justin Herbert. Who went from a maybe being offered to a probably.

No way is VA a Pac 12 QB. He has the arm, but not the size or the speed. Ergo, injuries. Maybe in a spread offense, but not in a pro-tyle under center, and certainly not as an option QB. He never (imho) made sense at Oregon.

As to the QB situation, Bryan Bennett (Who lost the starting job to MM) was a Payton award candidate and I believe was drafted out of SELA. Of course, he left UO rather than play backup. So, Oregon recruited 2 top tier QBs, they just lost both of them early. Once MM left after his jr year, UO was left with Jeff Lockie, who never really developed, and a couple of RS & true fresh that aren't really ready to play.

If Hoy isn't ready to play as a soph, the cats could easily find themselves in the exact same situation.

Oregon isn't running the option 95% of the time with either QB.

Seattle to Billings to Missoula to Bozeman to Portland to Billings

What a ride

Really

Because the zone read OPTION has the inside/outside zone give, QB keep, or QB pass OPTIONS.

Oregon doesn't play a pro-style under center offense, so him not fitting into that kind of offense is kind of a moot point. I also don't think that his injury had anything to do with his size or speed -- it was a flukey thing (broken finger). He had a pretty strong game against Michigan State, all things considered (one of the best teams in the nation). So it's kind of hard to argue that he's not a good fit at Oregon.

Also, speed isn't all that important in a QB in that system -- quickness is. And he has a huge amount of quickness. Yes, Mariota was very fast, but it is very rare to find a QB that has both the speed and arm of a Mariota -- there certainly are none currently in the Pac 12 that I am aware of. VA definitely has the skills to play in the Pac 12. Let's give the FCS just a bit of credit -- the top performers at QB (or any position, for that matter) at the FCS level are not only capable of playing at the FBS level, but they are often right up there with the best of them. VA was one of the best in FCS over the last several years. Let's also not forget that he brutalized Pac 12 defenses multiple times while being surrounded by FCS talent ... that alone tells you that the guy has Pac 12 talent (without question -- he already proved it despite a huge handicap).

They aren't running it. Neither are the Eagles with Bradford.

A zone read is different than a zone option QB run. :-k
