Poll finds Griz more likely to root for Cats than vice versa

The disdain appears to flow one way a bit more than the other in the Griz-Cat rivalry.

In the lead-up to the Montana-North Dakota State heavyweight brawl last week, a Treasure State blog posed the question: Who are Bobcat fans rooting for? A Montana Mint online poll of fans of both teams showed Montana State supporters were far less likely to support their in-state rivals than Montana fans.

While 83.9 percent of Griz fans said they would cheer for the Bobcats in a similar matchup with a big nonconference opponent, Cats supporters offered just 38.5 percent positive responses.


Here’s a look at the responses through the end of the week:

So of the 145 total fans polled, a little more than half, 57.9 percent (84 of 145) to be exact, would be willing to cross the aisle and cheer for their team’s rival.

Perhaps Grizzly fans will remember this the next time the Bobcats find themselves in such a big game.

I know one griz fan that roots for the Cats if they aren't playing. Out of all the other pumpkin puke orangers, noone roots for the Cats. I'm pretty sure MT mint run by a griz fan. I know Chive MT is a griz fan.

There is so much to say about this I barely know where to start. The major point to make I guess is that a huge percentage of Griz "fans" are purely bandwagon and only follow them and claim themselves Griz fans because it's the cool thing to do. Many of these fans are the ones that always say they root for both teams until they play each other. Secondly, it was very painful during the streak. Not so much painful in just the fact that we got beat every year, but a high percentage of the Griz fan base were completely ridiculous to deal with in terms of rubbing it in, kicking us when down, etc. Ya, maybe bunch of Cat fans would have acted that way if we would have been the ones on top, but not me.

I'll just leave this here:

Cat fans were asked if they were rooting for the griz in an actual game being played, and griz fans were asked if hypothetically they would root for the Cats.
Big difference there IMO.

That makes someone a good fan? Rooting for your biggest rival to win. The only time someone should do that is if it helps their team. This poll is nothing to be proud of. If it is then grizz fans should be rooting for MSU when they play each other.

FWIW I root for the cats outside of their game vs UM and I've been a fan my entire life. I can still remember when there was a possibility of a um msu chipper, i believe it was 06'. Pretty sure it was the year you guys lost to app state. In any case, I was ur biggest fan that week. Really wanted an all Montana championship. Just my opinion. Competition is good.

From personal experience I would say this is pretty accurate. Would anyone (honestly) disagree?

Neither attended um.

Ive never understand either teams' fanbase making fun of the other's bandwagon (non graduate) fans.

Isn't that what a successful program strives for, to gain new fans? Seems counter intuitive to make fun of that. Maybe it's just me.
