Ellis Henderson
Heated rivalries and (almost) all that come with them are great. But every now and then, you see something that transcends the rivalry and makes you remember that there are real people under those helmets and shoulder pads; people that have remarkable stories and do things that make you a fan of the player even if you hate the team. Ellis Henderson is one of those guys. He's overcoming hurdles to keep moving forward in life that would have planted most people on their faces.

Good for you, Ellis. Not that you needed it, but you have my respect.

Amazing that he went through all of this without many of us knowing it. U admire him for telling his story. He found out today tht he received the NCAA academic waiver so he will play this season. That is HUGE for us....but I hope it's even bigger for him.

It's a nice story and he seems like a great guy, but I'm a little confused. The Big Sky granted him a medical waiver or did the NCAA do that? It seems odd that he doesn't need to count last year as a full season. He played in five games. I thought you had to play in less than 20%. Are they bending the rules for him or have other players been given similar treatment? I know you can play in some games and still call it your redshirt year if you get hurt, but I'm not sure where they draw the line. Is that what they're doing here?

The limit is 30% of a team's regular and post season games, and he only appeared in 4 out of 14, or 28.6%.

The participation reports and team summary on the bigskyconf website says he played in five. Perhaps it's in error. I dont have a problem with it, but I just don't recall other players getting around that.Htowngriz wrote:Big Sky granted him the med. waiver/redshirt, NCAA cleared him up academically.[cat_bracket] wrote:It's a nice story and he seems like a great guy, but I'm a little confused. I went and looked on ESPN, and he only showed up in the box scores for the first four games, so I assume it's an error on the conference website.[cat_bracket] wrote:The participation reports and team summary on the bigskyconf website says he played in five. Re: Ellis Henderson
He doesn't show up in the box score on the bsc site either, but it does list him as playing in five games, including the UND game, which he had no stats in. Did he even make the trip or suit up for that game? The stats on gogriz.com also show him playing five.Htowngriz wrote:I went and looked on ESPN, and he only showed up in the box scores for the first four games, so I assume it's an error on the conference website.[cat_bracket] wrote:The participation reports and team summary on the bigskyconf website says he played in five. I see the missoulian says he didn't make the trip to UND.

Re: Ellis Henderson
As sad as this is, he wasn't even going to be considered for a medical redshirt from the big sky because of the belief that he played in five games. Five games would have put him over the 30% benchmark. It was pointed out to AJ Mazzolini and Griz media (from a Griz fan fan mind you) that he only played in four and did not make the trip to UND. This was then verified by the grizzlies athletic department and they submitted the medical redshirt to the big sky. Kind of scary that I took a fan to figure it all out. Gotta admit, Griz nation has passion. Idiots, but passion too

Glad they finally got it right (with some help from one of us in the unwashed masses). You'd hate to see a guy lose a season due to something as simple as that.Grizaddict wrote:As sad as this is, he wasn't even going to be considered for a medical redshirt from the big sky because of the belief that he played in five games. Re: Ellis Henderson
You'd think Henderson or someone within the athletic department would've double-checked that. Or just realized it off the top of their head right away. The first thing you do is verify that he played in five. The UND game would stick out since he had no stats. The first thing you'd ask from there is 'did he go?' Then if so 'did he play?' It took seven months?!? Hard to believe they're this inept after the investigation and probation.Bay Area Cat wrote:Glad they finally got it right (with some help from one of us in the unwashed masses). He seems like such a well-spoken individual in his interveiws. I'll be rooting him to play on Sundays. Long shot, but I can defininatly root for a kid like this.
