Brady Gustafson starting at UM?

It looks like he has the edge out of fall camp at least. The competition was wide open, but I have to say I'm a little surprised that he came to the forefront. Not that I don't think he's good. I just thought Simis or Chalich would emerge. Plus I'd heard talk of Gustafson transferring to Rocky.

Surprises me too. From what I'm hearing is that Stitt values proper decision making as the single most desirable attribute of a QB. Sure all OCs need good decision making, but that's really the ONLY necessary component in the Stitt philosophy. Guys like Simis and Chalich have spent their whole careers knowing their athletic ability and improvisational skills will help them stand out, but that's really not helping them now. I'm sure Chalich is kicking himself on this transfer. He may never see the field again unless he makes another move.

And from what I've read, he's way out in front. Not sure if he's just really that good, or if it's just a really complex system to grasp, or if they just don't have a lot of talented QB's or what. We'll find out.

It sounds like that offense is much more similar to the west coast offense than a read option or a spread offense, meaning the QB needs to have much higher quick decision making ability that work. From what I understand (I played defense, so this might not be 100% accurate), west coast is based much more on shorter timing routes, quick throws, etc. that sets up the long stuff. So quick decision making and accuracy are more important than what the legs can do. So a guy that gets it mentally, especially in the 1st year of the offense, is going to have a huge leg up over the raw physical talent. This will limit big mistakes as the rest of the offense is learned and mastered over the course of the season. So I would think that if Gustafson is standing out as they guy that'll take care of the ball, he'll win the job.

His numbers weren't off the charts, but they have a very good defense. All their backups look like they really struggled.
At Colorado Mines the QB ran it about 125 times, including sacks, per year. That's about 10 per game.

I can guarantee Brady won't be running 10 times per game, unless it's for his life.

Prater is the best QB on our roster, might have one of the biggest arms the BSC has ever seen. Very accurate and great touch.
No QB on our roster is more consistently accurate than Prater, its not even close.

What does he need to do better to beat out Gustafson?

Reps and experience, talent wise there is no comparison to any QB the Griz have had since I have been watching them. Prater has only played in 3 or 4 games in his life. Started playing football as a Junior and played in a few games his senior season. When/if it clicks this is gonna be great for us.....

I'm just interested to see how having 1/5 of the roster tied up with QB's and WR's is going to work out...

Gustafson has looked very good in the clips I have seen of him. He gets the ball out quick, accurate and in stride with the WR's making their break.

I think people forget how legit this kid was coming out of high school....teams were fighting over him and some FBS programs were even after him. The info below reminds me why I'm excited to see what he can do......
HIGH SCHOOL: He passed for 2,913 yards and 20 TDs with just eight interceptions to lead Billings West to an 11-2 record as a senior in 2011, when he was chosen the Class AA state MVP on offense. He is West's all-time leading passer with 6,202 yards. He is one of just eight players in Montana prep history to surpass 6,000 passing yards. He was 22-8 as a starter, including 22-5 his junior and senior seasons. He was one of just three Montana athletes to play the annual East-West Shrine Game, Montana-Dakota Football All-Star Game, and the Montana-Wyoming Football All-Star Basketball game. His prep football coach was Paul Klaboe. He was named to Great Falls Tribune "Super Team". He was named the Midland Roundtable (Billings) Athlete of the Year. He was a starter on West's 22-1state championship basketball team as a senior.

The high school career stats Brady Gustafson had at Billings West remind me an awful lot of the career Mark Desin had in Billings. They were both great high school players, only time will tell if one of them will be a great college player.

I was at the scrimmage. I thought Chalich looked like the 5th best qb. I rank them Gus. Prater. The frosh. Semi? Amd then Chalich. Gus TOWERS over everyone. He doesn't run fast but he looked like he will hit a guy trying to tackle him. Kind of a Big Ben type runner. EVERY qb on that team was throwing behind receivers.
Not sure why John n. is starting over Logwood. He looked much more impressive.
BTW. They have a punter that looks like he should be on the line. Big dude

Good observations. As for RB, Stitt says both Logwood and Nyugen are considered starters because of the amount of reps they will each have. He said they will basically be split down the middle with reps and carried, so technically one will be a starter but both will get very similar reps.

Nguyen should never be allowed on a D1 field and possibly not even Frontier fields. He is a liability and hes not even that good of a RB.
Logwood, Counts and Favors are light years ahead.

Yeah Prater has a strong arm. But.. Not accurate. Has terrible touch.. Throws a 2 yard inside slant like he's throwing a 15 yard out. Makes poor decisons with the ball and has struggled in his reads w/ Stitts "base" offense. The offense will be more complex this fall. He's slow and runs like duck.
Brady's #1. no one else is close.
Prater/Chalich are in a way distant second. Stitt will recruit QB heavily this year. After Gus, it's a mess.
