I posted that awhile ago in another thread and it didn't seem to get much attention. I'd compare it to rugby. They're just better form tacklers. Fewer injuries.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

It's a great idea. Actually you don't need to take the helmet away just take the facemask off and you get the same result. Football would be much safer without the facemask. More broken noses and missing teeth but less debilitating leg injuries and concussions.

These ideas sometimes sound bizarre, but sometimes they actually work. Coastal Carolina does non contact except in scrimmage. That seems to be working for them.

As an old Offensive Line Coach, we sometimes take the helmets away for a drill. (which we never do at full speed) This teaches the kids to extend their arms and get their heads out of the block. They learn pretty fast.

I'm going to incorporate several drills this year on my team -- I coach Jr High football in the Brighton school district here in Utah. I plan to visit Highland High School's spring drills and rugby practices. Highland has the best high school rugby program in the country and most of the rugby players also play fall football. The football coach requires no-pad rugby tackling drills, and has for some time now. He and his players are convinced they are much better tacklers because of it. The key, they say, is that in Rugby you have to control the ball carrier all the way to the ground, and even after you're on the ground. All that without pads or helmets. This teaches better fundamentals.

Highland Rugby alumnus and current Baltimore Ravens and NFL all‐pro defensive tackle, Haloti Ngata said, “My experiences playing for Highland Rugby were crucial to my development as a football player.”

ABOUT HIGHLAND RUGBY

Highland Rugby was founded in 1976 and has achieved an all‐time win‐loss record of 418‐10, winning 20 of the 27 national championships contested since 1985. In 1998, it competed in the first World School Boys Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe. It was the only team from the Western Hemisphere to qualify for the tournament and finished third. Highland Rugby has competed all across the United States and in many countries throughout the world, including Australia, New Zealand, Tonga and Zimbabwe.
