A Weber State University math instructor violated NCAA ethical conduct rules when she completed coursework for five football student-athletes, according to a decision issued by a Division I Committee on Infractions panel. During the investigation, student-athletes said they received hints about the proper approach, formulas or help with quiz and test answers.

Penalties and corrective measures include:

Public reprimand and censure.
Three years of probation from November 19, 2014 through November 18, 2017.
A fine of $5,000 plus two percent of the school’s football program operating budget.
A reduction of 9 football equivalency scholarships.

Very much sucks for them. They were most definitely on the rise and were going to carry a ton of momentum into next year. Not so much now.

Wow, 9 scholarships is a ton. I wonder how many seniors they have leaving? Unless it is a ton, having to drop 9 scholarships is going to mean the barely get to bring in any recruits next year.

Partial scholarships at our level is allowed.

Yes but offering recruits partials when other schools may offer full rides is a HUGE disadvantage. I didn't take time to read the article; was this self-reported?

Didn't say in the NCAA notice. So that means the kids will get that magic window for a year, go on a mission for two years, come back for their redshirt year and in essence play four years later in life than our kids. Seems fair to me...wish every student-athlete had that type of opportunity.

This can get complicated. USC lost 30 scholarships over three years.... ten per year... and could only sign 15 recruits per year over the three years instead of the normal 25. The net effect was to allow USC 75 full rides (told you it was complicated) instead of the normal FBS limit of 85. All FBS rides need to be full rides, no partials. FCS can offer partials, but the total of partials and full rides cannot exceed (A) 63 full rides or (B) a total number of 85 scholarships, ie. an FCS program can't, for instance, divide their 63 rides in a way to exceed 85 total rides.
I read at one point USC was operating with 44 total scholarships due to the sanctions, injuries and attrition. Not a USC fan but gotta admit they did an amazing job on the field given their situation. They are still making their way back.
