Sun Devils add hockey
Club hockey has been a successful club sport at Arizona State University, but now they are adding it to their NCAA roster of sports and want to be a national power. The athletic department has already raised $32,000,000. from alums and other interested supprorters to put it all together.

Re: Sun Devils add hockey
I wish there were some way we could influence our decision makers...there are many other activities I'd love to see our students involved in and for whatever reason, the only proactive voice I know of is Dr. Cruzado. I'm certain she has to be getting weary of listening to all of our ideas and dragging a rather reluctant group of administrators along with her thoughts and ideas. Remember how quickly she got the end zone accomplished? Yes, it's exciting to watch the growth academically at MSU but I'd kind of like to see the athletic department keep pace.bertram wrote:I wish Hockey was more mainstream here in Montana

Re: Sun Devils add hockey
After posting the above I tried for a few minutes to find UND's hockey budget, but couldn't come up with anything. I did find articles where writers said it was "expensive" because the cost of equipment was similar to football and it cost a lot to keep ice in a building.......
I took a look and UND's hockey site to look at the team and coaches. Roster has 26, all from cold weather states, 4 coaches (1 is a volunteer), an equipment mgr., and a strength coach...shared with other sports. NCAA limits D1 hockey to 18 scholarships, 13.5 for D2. Opponents are St. Cloud, W. Mich, Denver, Colorado College, Minn Duluth, Wisconsin, Air Force, Bemidji State, Providence. They had an exhibition with a Canadian school. So if they don't make a playoff or other post season event that's a 19 game schedule. My understanding is they fill their fabulous 11,000 seat hockey arena every time.

Wow. That seems like a lot of ca$h! I wonder how that compares to national powers like DU, BC, UND and Minnesota?Mr Lisle wrote:Club hockey has been a successful club sport at Arizona State University, but now they are adding it to their NCAA roster of sports and want to be a national power. I think MSU-Billings should start up a NCAA hockey program. They'd have the whole state behind them.

Unfortunately they wouldn't have a decent place to play as Centennial is not the best rink aroundBelgradeBobcat wrote:I think MSU-Billings should start up a NCAA hockey program. They'd have the whole state behind them.

Re: Sun Devils add hockey
I had sent the athletic department an email a few years ago about adding sports like hockey and soccer etc. Basically it was a no. Bozeman in general supports hockey better than most towns in Montana and I think it would be a great fit for MSU.
I'd have to look at other BSC schools but it seems like other schools offer more sports.

One solution would be raise $32,000,000 just like ASU and the Centennial is suddenly a hockey palace.WeedKillinCat wrote:Unfortunately they wouldn't have a decent place to play as Centennial is not the best rink aroundBelgradeBobcat wrote:I think MSU-Billings should start up a NCAA hockey program. Hockey is already big in Missoula. Would love the university to start a team, they shady have a rink and built in fan base. Only deterrent would be the popularity of the Maulers, the junior A squad in town

Not sure how accurate this is because, you know, athletic department accounting, but here are numbers from 2010 and before major conference realignment.grizzh8r wrote:Wow. Just realized I misread the post I quoted, but I'll leave the info I posted anyway. FYI the 32 million dollar donation to ASU will pay for adding a sport for title 9 compliance and will endow the hockey team for 10 years (part of the principal will be paid out each year). After ten years, ASU hopes the hockey program generate enough revenue to cover costs.

I'd like to see both Montana Sate and Montana make the jump to NCAA D1, but it's going to cost both schools around 80 million. If Montana State and Montana were to pursue starting a varsity hockey program the two leagues they'd be looking at is the NCHC and WCHA, both schools are going to want to be with North Dakota so the NCHC is most likely for them. The reason I say it's going to cost around 80 million to start a varsity hockey at Montana State is it doesn't look like the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse came make ice (I'm not sure is Montana has any facilities that could hold a hockey rink it it). So Montana State and Montana would need to build a facility for hockey. Montana State and Montana don't need to build a building the size of the Ralph Engelstad Arena, but a building that holds 5,000 to 7,000 would be a good size for both schools. Looking a few arenas that were just built; Bemidji's arena seats 4,373 and cost 75 million to build, Duluth's arena seats 6,600 and cost 80 million to build, and Omaha is building a 7,000+ seat 82 million arena that will open next season (a two NHL ice sheets and is going to be the home for hockey, men's and women's basketball, and women's volleyball).

Won't happen in a million years at MSU or UM. Hockey is just not a big part of our culture in Montana like it is in North Dakota and Minnesota. I don't know why that is, it just is. We had a nice hockey arena in the Bozeman area...it's now a giant beer cooler.cberkas wrote:I'd like to see both Montana Sate and Montana make the jump to NCAA D1, but it's going to cost both schools around 80 million. Why doesn't NDSU have a D-1 hockey team.

I've heard that their donors will stop donating if they more their club team to the NCAA level. They could use Scheels Arena where the USHL team plays, and NDSU is using it for basketball this year. Scheels is hosting the NCAA West Regional for hockey this year and sold out within ten minutes tickets went on sale.BelgradeBobcat wrote:Won't happen in a million years at MSU or UM. Hockey is a marquee kind of sport. I'm if it got going at NDSU it could bleed off support from the football and basketball programs. I can understand why some of the powers-that-be don't want that to happen. Hockey is far and away the big deal at UND isn't it?-the other sports-even football don't come close.cberkas wrote:I've heard that their donors will stop donating if they more their club team to the NCAA level. Re: Sun Devils add hockey
You hear hockey called a niche sport most of the time, you are the first I've heard call hockey a marquee sport. Hockey is a big deal at UND because they have been playing at the NCAA D1 level since 1929-30 (that's the earliest I can find). UND I having success in women's volleyball and women's basketball, The fans want the men's basketball coach fired, and football, to me, should be .500 or better this year. UND is building a new indoor practice facility that will also have a 300 meter 8 lane track, and all the other stuff for the indoor track program. NSDU only cares about football.BelgradeBobcat wrote:

Arizona has some people saying the Wildcats should join Arizona State in NCAA D1 hockey. Alabama has surfaced as another school looking at going NCAA D1, the Alabama club hockey team plays in the ACHA D3 where Montana State, Montana, and Montana Tech all play in ACHA D2.
