Injuries

Post by catatac » Wed Aug 13, 2014 2:15 pm

I agree it seems we have been getting more than our share of key injuries the past few years, but it sound like UM might be getting hit with the injury bug at the WRONG place at the WRONG time. Schmaing is reportedly out with Appendix issue, Poole having back\disk issues. Both projected starters, and if you recall - they had brutal graduation losses along the O Line with three players heading to NFL. I'm not sure if they have an ace up their sleeve but it looks like they'll be counting on the Hines brothers (Supposedly good size, good in the weight room but reportedly soft), a true Freshman at center  , and a smaller, converted tight end at tackle? Looking at their roster, I don't see much experience there. They may be in trouble already, especially if Poole and Schmaing don't make it back... but then if they sustain any more injuries there, could be brutal.

Also sounds like a projected starting safety (Whitted?) is out having shoulder surgery.

I think UM's biggest problem is going to be replacing their LBs. Coyle and Tripp are both impressing their NFL teams in training camp, and Kanongata’a could flat-out light up opposing runners and receivers. As an Oregon Duck fan, I saw a good run defense in 2012 become a sieve in 2013, and that was with most of their DL returning. Losing Dion Jordan/Michael Clay/Kiko Alonso shouldn't have been as big of a deal for an Oregon, either, since there is much more NFL talent on that roster compared to UM.

It's hard to say how much of an effect those injuries will have. Appendix is usually not a big deal unless there are complications. Typically back in two weeks. Both have missed a lot of playing time, so they might miss the first game, but they could easily be back after that. Poole's back is the bigger concern as those can linger and flare back up.

From what I've gathered they look good on offense, which is tough to read because usually the defense is ahead early on in camp. That could just all be fluff or misreads by reporters.

Are Bobby Hauck's recruits all gone now?

His signees are all gone. He and his staff recruited most of the 2010 class, which was signed by Pflugrad.

Ya, tough to say. They may be able to figure out a decent lineup, especially if they get Poole and Schmaing back AND if they can stay healthy. It's not looking too good for them now however. Will be the smallest Griz O Line since 1973, lol

Does anybody know what's going on with Ellis Henderson? He's had some sort of bacterial infection for some time, and apparently isn't even practicing.

Bill Speltz ‏@billspeltz · 11m
Coach Delaney says WR Ellis Henderson is struggling with a bacterial infection and his status for the near future is unknown.

It was announced in pregame today that Ellis Henderson will be withdrawing from school and going back to Vancouver. The infection has gotten worse it looks like.

Good luck Ellis get well and hope to see you back on the field but if not thank you for everything.

Yuck. I hope it's not a life-threatening issue. Just a few years ago one of the Bignells (I think) had a serious infection in his back that was touch and go for a while. Hope he has a speedy recovery!

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

That was Clay. I remember he missed the 2009 Cat-griz game because of it.

Hate to see impact players, or any for that matter, sidelined from sickness/injury. Football is not as important as getting healthy and moving forward in life. Good luck to Ellis!

Thanks for the help! He fully recovered IIRC. Hopefully Henderson does too.
