The uniform arms-race continues. Check out Northwestern's patriotic (and Under Armour produced) uniforms they will be wearing when they play Michigan on Nov. 16th:

Guess they decided their school colors weren't cool anymore? Can't wait to hear the people that complain about how one shouldn't be wearing the flag.

You don't wear the American Flag as a garment.
I flip around the dial on game day and am treated to some of the most bizarre, idiotic, strange non-uniforms imaginable! When do the players start putting on stage makeup?
There are teams that don't know one end of the football from the other, but BOY they look badass.
At this point I'm okay with a gold/blue helmet and a few uni-variations, but show up in black pants, jersey and white helmet and I'm putting away the checkbook. Sorry, I'm not into "football fashion". Give me USC, Texas, Alabama, Michigan and Penn State any day. Oregon?

I'm all about uniform variations, I am younger so that may be why I'm more open to it but the main thing is that players love it and it helps with recruiting because it gets prospects attention and they like the crazy uniforms. Also I feel strongly about the whole "look good, feel good, play good" aspect. When it comes to uniforms like Penn State, Bama, USC, Texas and Michigan I understand if the school has a history like that but MSU does not have that history so I'm all for playing with new uniform combinations. For the record I am also a big fan of Oregon

I do not see this as wearing the flag. I really like the look, patriotic, but not abusing the flag.

I see the field of blue, the white stars, the red and white stripes adorning a football helmet.... I respectfully disagree.
To me it makes the "Redskin" discussion a non issue.

So if you see people wearing a flag on their 9.88 t shirt from walmart at the 4th of July parade are you offended. I don't see any thing wrong with this. It is the same thing with me. Patriotic behavior comes in many stripes. Who is to decide what is right and what is wrong?

I agree with Lisle.
I think the flag fashion crap is disrespectful, hats, shirts, uniforms etc.
Its our flag................................(well it used to be anyway) it should be honored instead of marketed and abused.

The whole idea of wearing a uniform which is modeled after our flag is to support our military. It's really surprising to me to see people make this into some argument that the flag shouldn't be "worn". There is a huge difference between wearing a rendition of the stars and stripes and wrapping an actual flag around yourself. The respect for our flag is about respecting our flag not all renditions of the stars and stripes.

Whatever. People decide in many ways to show their patriotism. I remember after 9/11 that news people were judged if they didn't wear a flag lapel on their suits. Patriotism is individual and should not be judged by others. There are so many other egregious examples of disrespecting the flag.

See, I knew this is where it would end up.
For me personally, I can see both sides of the wearing the flag thing. Can be debated whether that is technically a flag or not, but it's close enough in my eyes. A part of me feels it is a bit disrespectful to the men and women who sacrifice for that flag to have a sports team using it for what boils down to a marketing tactic, but another part of me just isn't sure if it really needs to be that big of a deal.
My biggest issue here is that the team isn't playing for country, they are playing for their school. I think these uni's are pretty sweet, but they are the kind of uniform that would make sense if there were some kind of World Cup of American Football or something. I hate uniforms that don't represent the school, it's mascot and it's colors--and yes that goes for things like all pink uni's, halloween costume uni's, etc. There are plenty of ways to go about the multiple uniform/helmet thing while still representing your school and I'm all for that, I like some of the crazy uni's that Oregon and Maryland and others have had.
