Next Griz Coach
Maybe this has been discussed here and I missed it, but I'm curious what everybody thinks the Griz will do next year. Are they waiting to see if Delaney can put his fingerprint on the team, or have they always just seen him as the guy to get them through the tough times? I personally don't think they've ever planned on him staying more than two years. But if that's the case, who's the next guy? Is it somebody already with the program? Are they better off keeping Delaney for continuity's sake?
I just can't imagine he's the guy of the future there, even though he should be commended for being a good, steady leader through some tough times. His play calling at times has been pretty questionable (at best), and the game seems to be moving a little faster than him.
I know how this works though. Coaches get the vote of confidence mid-season, but the AD is making arrangements and having meetings with prospective coaches all along. I say get Brint Wahlberg.

The next Griz head coach is already on the staff, its another inside hire.....................so we get what we get not even a sniff of a better candidate.

Is that a guess or is that something you've heard? Do you think somebody on the staff is the right guy?AlphaGriz1 wrote:The next Griz head coach is already on the staff, its another inside hire.....................so we get what we get not even a sniff of a better candidate.
I really don't know anything about the staff besides Gragg or Gregorak...I'm assuming it'd be one of those?

From what I hear it will be either Gragg or Gregorak. I wouldn't mind if this was Delaney's last year and we actually did a nationwide search but I have a feeling if the Griz make the playoffs then Delaney gets to stay. Our current admin haven't made the best decisions.
GO GRIZ!

I don't know the next coach, but its highly unlikely that he arrives next season. There's something about being in a position for three years and retirement. Delaney will go at least three is my prediction.
MSU - 17 team National Champions (most recent 2025); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

You are correct, and that is an angle I hadn't really thought about. In the state retirement system, your monthly pension is based on your highest three consecutive years salary. Given his time at UM and MSU over the years, he would have several years paid in to that system, but nothing close to the salary he is pulling in as the HC. Three years at that rate would have to greatly impact his retirement for the positive...he'd be crazy not to stay another year if they want him to.TomCat88 wrote:I don't know the next coach, but its highly unlikely that he arrives next season. And, given that UM doesn't believe in bold calls/decisions/hires/public stances currently, I am sure they will do just that.
As for the future, the rumor that floats around the most is Gragg is the coach in waiting, safe and easy...I think it would be a real shame not to do a national search whenever this job opens, if for nothing else to talk to some other coaches and maybe get some new ideas/perspectives on things...but I digress.
“I think I've heard every coach that's coached against the Grizzlies this year sit up here and say, ‘You know, we're better than those guys, and we can beat those guys,' ” said Kramer. “You know what? The truth is you ain't. So shut. The heck. Up.

Probably true that UM will stay inside or hire some former assistant. Dennehy, Glenn, Hauck and Delaney were connected to UM in some way prior to their hires.GRZZ wrote:You are correct, and that is an angle I hadn't really thought about.
