Horner leaves Griz according to gogriz.com
Freshman tight end Josh Horner out of Great Falls CMR has left UM citing personal reasons. Horner was a Tribune super state and AA all state selection.
MSU - 17 team National Champions (most recent 2025); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

College football isn't for everyone, but it's rare for someone to drop college football just a few days into it. Hopefully his personal reasons are nothing beyond just not feeling comfortable in this kind of setting.
I have no idea if this had anything to do with it, but there were four other TEs brought in with this recruiting class. Horner doesn't have a position listed, but the pervailing thought was that he'd play TE (WR and DE were other considerations) in college. UM brought in Sprunk, Harper (freshman after two-year LDS mission), Scarver and Ralston.

Ouch that one has to sting for the Griz. He was a man among boys out there at WR in the all star games(size/speed/athletic). If your heart isn't into it though it is better to do it now than later I guess. It sounds like he could still come back too. That's a big notch out of the Griz recruiting class this year as he was going to be great for them.

How does this effect his future eligibility? Does this count as one of his years? Would he be able to enroll and play Division 1 football elsewhere this year?

Just guessing here, but I think um,would have to grant a release and he'd have to sit out a year/redshirt. I think he could play naia right awayRich K wrote:How does this effect his future eligibility? Does this count as one of his years? general rule is you have 5 years to play 4 (only exception is military, civil, or religious service full time) NCAAwbtfg wrote:Just guessing here, but I think um,would have to grant a release and he'd have to sit out a year/redshirt. 5 year clock starts once you are enrolled and start classes (official student of the university)
if that has not yet happened, I presume the 5 year eligibility clock has not started for him
yes, if UM granted him a release he could play for any NCAA Div 1 school this year without having to redshirt
I have not read UM's NCAA penalties, but sometimes schools under penalty are required to grant releases to student athletes who ask for one (a la Penn State)
if they don't grant him a release he could still go to another NCAA school and redshirt this year (IF he has time to be accepted and enroll), and have 4 years to play
yes, he could play NAIA right away - they have their own eligibility rules (kind of - seems anyone, anywhere can play a sport at an NAIA school as long as they are a student) separate from NCAA
OR he could not go to any school this year, go work in oil fracking operations in eastern MT, Wyoming or Utah or whatever, and start his 5 year clock next year, or the year after that, etc. (IF he is not currently a student of the University of Montana)
It's hard to know what to do sometimes where you're 17-18 years old, no? Best wishes to the young man, I hope he plays football somewhere - it is a privilege and worth the hard work.

Not going to Carroll but there is money there if he wants to go. He will not be playing anywhere. He is burned out on football and does not want to play right now, period.
Also has a broken foot that has never healed completely from last fall.

Good for him to have the courage to make that decision. I suspect this is more common than we realize, and that a lot of kids just do what they do because of the expectations/pressures put on them by others. If this is the path that's going to make him happy in his life, then it's the right decision.CPACAT wrote:LongTimeCatFan wrote:Probably going to Carroll where his cousin is coaching
