DoJ Wraps Up MPD "Investigation"
A freaking year.....for this. Wow. I've actually been hoping for something damning.....by anyone connected to Missoula in order to justify this snore-fest. But, we all sleep safer knowing that MPD will interview accusers at their homes rather than the police station. FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!

As per the article, FVV still refuses to cooperate. The only option left for the DoJ is to sue. I wonder how much of an affect the revelations of their recent abuses of power will have on their decision. My guess is they're going to be a little busy for a while defending themselves instead of flexing their muscles.

and“MPD’s investigations are marked by practices that significantly compromise the effectiveness of MPD’s response to sexual assault and contribute to the under-enforcement of sexual assault laws in Missoula,” according to a letter from the DOJ to Missoula Mayor John Engen.
This thing could go from bad to worse if that happens. The letter also mentioned communication problems with the County Attorney’s Office regarding its decisions on whether to prosecute sexual assault cases. Police administrators “acknowledged that detectives are ‘frustrated’ with MCAO’s ‘lack of follow-up and prosecution’ in cases of sexual assault.”
The County Attorney’s Office has refused to cooperate with the Justice Department investigation. The DOJ’s Austin said Wednesday that his office could sue if the County Attorney’s Office spurns a proposed agreement.

They had to say something negative. But it was comical. You have to admit that. And the DoJ won't be suing anyone for a long time. They'll be too busy defending themselves from lawsuits stemming from their abuse of power.ABQCat wrote:tampa_griz wrote:A freaking year.....for this. Wow. Re: DoJ Wraps Up MPD "Investigation"
The DOJ is a pretty big department ... they probably can handle the AP thing while also putting up a public face as crusaders against sexual assault. So I don't think their judgment will be swayed all that much by the AP thing (which will likely not be much of a "thing" within a week or so, anyway, given the churn of the news cycle).

They weren't going to sue anyway. They would have looked dumber than they do now if they had. But now that they're on the defensive it is even less likely they'll feel the need to try to push more people around.Bay Area Cat wrote:The DOJ is a pretty big department ... they probably can handle the AP thing while also putting up a public face as crusaders against sexual assault. How are police practices that lead to under reporting and under convicting sexual assaults "funny"?tampa_griz wrote:They had to say something negative. But it was comical. You have to admit that. Because that didn't happen. Drama queens make me laugh. You sound disappointed. The alternative would be they found some major transgressions and cover-ups. Maybe even some against the football team. I'd think you'd be in I told ya so mode.

Re: DoJ Wraps Up MPD "Investigation"
I AM disappointed. I was hoping for something worthy of an ABC after-school-special starring Katherine Heigl and narrated by Morgan Freeman. And I don't like most cops so if they would've got some bad PR I wouldn't have shed a tear. Instead, all of this has been a huge let-down so far.[cat_bracket] wrote:You sound disappointed. Re: DoJ Wraps Up MPD "Investigation"
FVV calls DoJ "bullies". After the last two weeks they've had I think FVV has a lot of company. The terrible PR they've received lately will probably prevent them from taking this much further.
