Former UCLA safety transfers to Eastern Washington

Cheney, WA (Sports Network) - Two weeks after being dismissed from the UCLA football program, safety Tevin McDonald has transferred to Eastern Washington, the Big Sky university announced Tuesday.

A two-year starter with the Bruins, he was dismissed on March 27 for violating team policy.

He also was suspended from UCLA's Holiday Bowl game in December. The Los Angeles Times reported at the time that McDonald had failed three drug tests.

McDonald is enrolled in classes at EWU and will begin practicing with the team as early as Thursday. He is the son of six-time NFL All-Pro safety Tim McDonald, who is now the defensive back coach for the New York Jets.

"After consultation with many people and having a long discussion with Tevin, we've determined that he deserves the opportunity to continue his collegiate career," EWU head coach Beau Baldwin said. "We have high expectations of him off the field, in the classroom and on the field."

McDonald, a 6-foot-1, 190-pounder from Fresno, Calif., had 135 tackles in 27 career games at UCLA, with four interceptions and 14 pass breakups.

Between basket weaving and ballet dancing he should have enough time to go rehab meeting which should really help him stay on the up and up. Eastern probably gets a discount on a group rate if they keep so many of them in counceling together.

Dakota Prukop -MSU Quarterback
Dude on my plane is wearin a Montana Grizzlie shirt. I'm pretty sure he's the reason our whole plane smells like B.O.

Kurt Davis-MSU Receiver
I needed a change for one, but for two, I HAD to go to Coach Haucks rival school.

One of these days all this is going to blow up in their face and then Missoula will look like nothing

I saw post on eGriz that made me laugh. "All players with past trouble that play at other schools are thugs. Our players with past trouble are good kids who screwed up and deserve a second chance". It's a statement applicable to every fanbase of every team.

Point taken

I do try to be objective, however, -- many here on BN were not amused when MSU gave a montana kid who got in trouble at a Pac12 school a second chance in Bozeman -- despite obvious talent. One key difference to me though, is that Coach Ash & staff really do not put up with any BS, and they've proven that multiple times. MSU does run a tight ship. I don't think the same can be said about a lot of other schools.

Maybe I don't know enough about Eastern's track record with these guys, they sure seem to bring in a lot of them -- I guess kudos to them because we don't hear a lot of bad news about these kind of recruits/transfers once they arrive in Cheney. But then, how much trouble can a guy get into in Cheney?
