It looks like this is going pass.
Bill Info

I say it's about time. Coaches can still be given a one year deal, but this opens the door.

Edited by kmax to change link so it didn't screw up page width.

Whoever sends Everett, Hawk, Malcolm, McGillvray, Morgan, Stahl and Ward needs to get this information out; they are the only negative voters! What century are they from? And I'm too lazy to check which district they represent.

This was signed into law by the governor today. Does anyone know the actual impact of this? Can schools now offer coaches multi-year contracts or do the regents still have some control over this and could make this effectively moot?

This wording within the text of the bill should help.

That really clears things up....Thanks!

I had already read that, and by that it seems to me that this is just allowing the regents to do this, thus my question. I am not a lawyer, nor one of those ones in Helena that write the laws so that is why I was asking, what exactly does this change allow and who does it allow to do it?

I thought the words are very clear  Now we get to see if "...THE PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITS OF THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM..." have any backbones...Units are the individual member institutions, e.g., us be one 8) Can't wait to see what the regents try to do...talk about a separation of powers! Just be glad that our foundation hasn't copyrighted all of our logos as happened with the University of Georgia and the academe is sitting watching the athletic department run the school now (but that's not necessarily a bad idea as the foundation now has a larger budget than the school

Speaking of copyrighting logos, the main Oregon ones are owned by Nike and Disney. Besides, isn't everyone stoked about the Seattle Mariners logo and the branding logo proposed for Montana State.

Random thoughts on logos aside, this really is a good thing.

I think that allowing multi-year contracts is one of the best things for Montana sports. I always thought that signing coaches to a one-year deal was asinine. I think that this could really help keep and recruit quality coaches.

I wish we had a booster with the kind of money Phil Knight has  All that money as a shoe salesman...

Ok, I'll talk to Phil and see if he'll throw you guys a pair of shoes or something.

Seriously, this bill is a good thing but it's not quite clear if the regents still have the power to keep the contracts limited to one year. I'm looking into it.

My only recommendation would be that the legislature abolish the Board of Regents--that is if they actually pull a power play :-^ However, one would think with a Bobcat governor attempting to emplace his own people, we'll be in a decent position whereas that "institution" just the other side of Warm Springs may have a few problems :-k

I don't see how this changes much in the near term. Multi-year @ 0.00 is still 0.00.

All embellishment aside, the real winner might be athletic dept., because if a coach has a multi-year contract, then another school who signs our coach would, presumably, have to pay off the existing contract.

I suppose it might help in some way, although there appears to be no reluctance to come to um in spite of just a little over a hundred grand for year...I've no clue what the interst would be to come to MSU once Krames leaves, but I would guess that as of now, MSU would be just as enticing to an up-and-coming young coach.

Yeah, I'm fascinated by this process. It bothers me that our head coach makes little more than a high school coach in many states :-& In fact, some high school coaches serving as athletic directors make considerably more than Coach Kramer and some states allow their booster clubs to supplement their coaches salaries with housing, cars, country club memberships--at the high school level  Oh well, we've got all these school districts in this state and you know...we've got to pay them something...and nothing times nothing means they must just be here for the mountains, hunting, fishing and this experience looks good on a resume  Tell that to your banker...and the personnel director when they ask how many students were in your school
