Miles Community College Pioneers

Post by CatFamily » Tue Mar 04, 2008 12:03 am

MCC Lady Pioneers defeated NE Nebraska tonight in the semi-final of the Region 9 tourney... now 31-1 and have won 43 straight at home. They play for the title and a trip to the National Tourney tomorrow night.

This has to be one of the finest seasons any Montana College has had JC or otherwise and they should recieve some kudos from us. A gem in the rough coaches them... Coach Dwight Gunnare... who coached Colstrip high school to 8 straith state tourney trips and two Class A state championships. They have a team with mostly Montana girls and are ranked 12th nationally at this point.

I really like what Binford has done, and I am not one to mind that the Cats recruit out of state when they lose out on top in-state recruits. However, as a Miles City homer, I do believe that the Lady Cats should take more of look at the Pioneers and girls basketball in general from the eastern side of the state. Most of the state championships, at all levels, have been won by teams in the eastern half of the state lately. I don't equate best team to having the best players, but winning titles and competing at a high level can't be understated either.

I believe that a few of the Pioneers would be able to play very productive minutes for the Lady Cats in the next year or two. Two years ago the Pioneers had a girl sign with Villanova. On this years team, Micula has already signed with UTEP and McNamee is being recruited hard by several Div. I schools--including Weber St.

I was told that Western Nebraska has 5 signed Div. I players on the roster. It should be a tough game for the Lady Pioneers.

The lady Pioneers lost a heartbreaker 51-48 and finish the year 31-2. Coach Gunnare has led them to 3 strait 20 win seasons including 25-6 last year. They play defense like no other team leading the NJCAA nation this year giving up 48 a game while averaging 82 a game. It is just great to see a Montana school do so well and they deserve a lot of praise. I for one sure hope Coach Gunnare stays at MCC but truthfully believe he is going to become a hot commodity in the near future. WELL DONE LADY PIONEERS!

You are one of the best Catfamily, for a Bobcat anyways ;) and I am very impressed with what MCC accomplished this year. Those young women played an excellent season, and it is impossbile for me to say anything about Coach Gunnare without my obvious bias shining through...All of the coaches at MCC have built something pretty special as far as athletics are concerned, and people are starting to take notice.

Best of luck to all of the Lady Pioneers in their future endeavors, and thanks for noticing their hard work. Whether or not Coach Gunnare stays at MCC for another year or until he hangs up the towel for good (his trade mark) I know this group of gals will always be special. Heck, they are all special. particularly that 99' state team, right Catfamily ;)

P.S. No I am not Coach Gunnare....close, but not quite

Great run, sadly it ends. I watched the news last night and they said the team that beat MCC has been in this districts championship game the past 18 years.

They are the 800 lb Gorilla in the league. Each year they produce multiple D-I talented players, and recruit more potential D-I talent. Their facilities are top notch, and they are well coached. The fact MCC has closed a gap (which was at one point almost comical) is a testament to just how hard this program is trying to develop. Luckily, there is no shortage of talent in Eastern Montana for girls basketball, and once some of these girls see that MCC is an opportunity and not a last resort I think this gap closes for good.

There have been some amazing basketball players to come out of this program, and I see the future only getting better.

For a minute there, I thought you were talking about UM. 8)

J/K, thanks for the update. I don't pay much attention to JUCO ball, let alone Womens JUCO ball. Sounds like that coach has been there forever. Good to see MCC closing the gap. :)

It was very fun following the team in the tournament on the radio. I was sure hoping for a different outcome. It was a good game.
