New unc bears QB

Post by 94VegasCat » Sat Jan 19, 2008 1:24 pm

Brian Waggener a 6foot6, 232lb qb from the University of Florida has enrolled at UNC and will compete with others in spring drills. He broke his ankle last year and fell to number 4 on the Gator depth chart. Before going to UF, during JC years he was recruited by Ole' Miss, Auburn, Oregon State, Utah and Florida.

I copied and pasted the above from AGS.

I saw that earlier, looks like a good get for the Bears. It didn't say how many years of eligiblility he has left- I'm guessing two since he apparently was JC for a couple years & was out with injury last year.

The issue at quarterback for the University of Northern Colorado is an issue no longer.

Sources close to the football program told the Tribune on Friday that 6-foot-6, 232-pound quarterback Bryan Waggener has transferred from the University of Florida to UNC and will play for the Bears next season.

This will be Waggener's third stop in the last three years.

After being recruited by Ole Miss, Auburn, Oregon State, Utah, Washington and Florida coming out of Citrus College in Glendora, Calif., Waggener transferred to Florida last January and struggled to climb the depth chart. According to The Gainesville Sun, Waggener fractured his foot in the first practice of spring football and dropped to fourth on the depth chart behind Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and true freshmen Cameron Newton and John Brantley.

At Citrus College, Waggener was named to the second-team All-Western State Conference squad for leading the Fighting Owls to their fourth straight WSC Southern Division Championship with 1,558 yards passing and 10 touchdowns. During his freshman campaign, Waggener threw for 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns with a 60.8 completion percentage.

The Bears haven't wasted any time adding Waggener to the mix. According to the source, Waggener has already enrolled in classes at the university so he can be ready to participate in spring football. And because he transferred to a Football Championship Subdivision team, Waggener will be eligible to play for UNC next season.

Even though Waggener may be the biggest name the Bears have received a commitment from in their current recruiting class, he isn't the only player that plans to sign a letter of intent with UNC Feb. 6 on national signing day.

According to the source, the Bears have received verbal commitments from Nick Hernon (6-2, 217-pound defensive end from Douglas County), Marcus Lucas (6-5, 230-pound defensive end from Rangeview High School), Nick Candler (6-5, 230-pound offensive lineman from Boulder High School), Tony Kolone (6-3, 290-pound defensive tackle from Palomar junior college in San Marcos, Calif.) and Logan Zabel (6-3, 225-pound linebacker from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M junior college in Miami, Okla.).

While UNC head coach Scott Downing prefers to redshirt players their first year in the program, Lucas will probably have no choice. The high school senior suffered a fractured vertebrae in his neck in a Nov. 3 football game against Highlands Ranch.

Before the injury, Lucas -- the brother of Maurice Lucas, who has a full-ride football scholarship to the University of Colorado -- was being recruited by Kansas, Colorado State and Washington State, according to the Rocky Mountain News.
He was a 4-star recruit from scout.com coming out of high school (class of '07).

Thanks for the article- looks like a really good get for them, but how can he be a high school class of '07? He was at a JC for a year or two and at Florida last year.

Maybe I read it wrong then. I guess if that were the case then he was from the recruiting class of '07 from a JC in that class. So, he graduated in '05 then.

Okay, not to be rude, but you gotta wonder why?? Why UNC? Seems like an odd place for this guy to land.

I'm guessing he didn't. I think the Griz feel pretty comfortable at QB over the next 4-5 years. I just don't understand what the attraction to UNC was. The guy isn't from Colorado. Didn't play JC ball there. I just think it's a little odd.

Is this guy going to be as good as the star dropdown SEC transfer QB Weber got last year?

Tony Kolone (6-3, 290-pound defensive tackle from Palomar junior college in San Marcos, Calif.)
I wonder if this young man is any relation to the Chris Kolone that played for the CATS?

The only question I have is why they need another QB they beat you guys with the one they had.

You know how some teams just have another teams number.................

They need another quarterback to beat the other 10 teams on their schedule. They'll use Breazeal (sp?) when they play us.
