Cat fans vs Griz fans

There have been many posts the last couple of weeks stating that the Cat fan attitude toward the griz is not directed toward the team or coaches but at the griz fans who it appears are a lot different from Cat fans. I am curious just what that difference is. The majority of the student body is from Montana at both schools. We have students from Missoula and they have students from Bozeman. I assume that the distribution of students from places like Helena, Great Falls, Billings, Butte, Malta, Fort Benton, etc is fairly even between MSU and UM. As far as the fans who are no longer students I will assume that most live in Montana and that most of them grew up in Montana (for both schools). So is the only difference the win/loss records? And if that is the only difference and the shoe was on the other foot would they be saying the same thing about us?
Maybe it is as simple as they cheer for the wrong school. When I lived in Fort Benton I did not like Malta fans and when I lived in Hamilton I did not like Stevensville fans. Stevensville was only 18 miles from Hamilton but their fans were just awful and Hamilton fans are the best. A lot must change in those 18 miles.

I live in Fort Benton now and I still don't like Malta fans.

I would like to think that I am above being petty about an interstate football game, but you never know if the shoe is on the other foot. I enjoyed the streak, but I didn't lose any sleep or hair when it ended. I think if all comes down to how seriously you take yourself and where your priorities are. I love the griz and try to go to all the games I can, but I am much more devoted to my family and every other part of my life that is more important than college sports. I have family to take care of and share my life with and I have bills to pay. I don't think we are all that different. I think for the most part we are normal people with a percentage of us who any sense of logic when it comes to the cross state rival.

My Dad just told me today that it really helped that I went to MSU. He said it made him realize just how crazy Griz fans are. He even said his coworker makes it hard for him to be a Griz fan.

I have always said...I respect what the griz have done, but I will still root against them. This may make me petty, and I can live with that. But in my mind a TRUE Rivelry (sp?) means you never root for the other team. I am sorry but that is the way I look at it. We are one of the longest running rivels and ther is nothing wrong with wishing in-will to the other team. I will always root for the MONTANA KIDS to do well in any game. I was very upset when beagly(sp again) broke his wrist because he is a Montana kid, but I still hope the griz lose.
P.S. Alot of this may come from the streak. I did live in bozeman for the past 31 years.

I am a Griz fan and I hate most of the Griz fans. A great deal of them are Condecending Pompous Assholes and they are embarrasssing.
Cat fans are not quite as bad but only because you don't win like we do.

What I have found over the years is that the guys that bought a hat and root for the Griz because they win are the people that I have problem with. I know a couple of Griz season ticket holders, great guys and they like to talk Grizzlies but don't condescend. The friends I have that went to UM are generally descent when it comes to it. It seems to me it's the rest of them that are obnoxious and prevent me from ever rooting for the griz.
p.s. Thanks Wofford

I would have to say that the fans that I have the most trouble with are the ones whose self-worth is based on a Football Game. The fans could be Griz, Cats, Dolphins, Packers...doesn't matter. These are the one's who tend to take a condescending attitude towards a fan of the "losing" team.
Just because someone's team won, doesn't meant that they are superior to a person who is a fan of the team that lost. And the opposite holds true.
By and large, this is not the case....but you do run into fans who's personal self-respect is based on how some 20 year old kids do on the FB field.
I should know, because I used to be one. Funny how growing older, having kids, and dealing with other "life" stuff will help put a FB game into perspective.

It boils down to 2 simple things:
Griz ~ Gloating
Cats ~ Envy
It makes for a very volatile mix of attitudes, especially for the more unstable folks...many of whom post here regularly.

I was on E-Griz last night getting a chuckle out of some of the comments. But what bothered me most was the name calling that they do like Fa**ot, Gay, F'n this and that....really classy. These are the kinds of Griz fans I have come to dislike. It's the arrogance from all their winning and when they lose they lose hard....Humble Pie is not a bad thing...

I have to agree that those people who post those things have no class at all. They are the ones who are mean and bitter and take the rivalry thing way too seriously. They talk trash at the opposing team and rub your nose in it when they win. When they lose, they eat their young and turn on their own team. I don't consider those people fans.

People in general all over the state that are casual football fans are sick of Griz fans. Even some Griz fans are sick of Griz fans. They're sick of seeing people wearing clothing with Griz stuff on it. The Griz thing/fad has gotten old. It's just played.
I see a lot of people that look like bums with Griz gear on. It's either getting recyled through Salv. Army or fans throw the stuff in the gutter after they leave Wash-Griz after another playoff loss and it gets picked up.

I agree. Watching the game yesterday and listening to the players being interviewed before it, I have to say those young guys seem like decent young men. There was a part of me that would have like to see them do well, then the other part that has to listen to the griz fans. They are the reason I don't cheer for the griz. The fanatic fans are more than likely the reason Carpenter was so distraught. Not because he felt (incorrectly) that he lost the game, not because his football career could be over, but he was most likely upset because the fanatic egrizzers will eat him alive.

I agree fans are fans. Fans of teams that win a lot get old. They just brag too damn much.

So you only have class 4 or 5 times a year?

OK I have been watching this thread all day and haven’t commented.
Griz fans suck. They are arrogant and condescending jerks. Most of the ones I know personally don’t know much about the game, their team, the opponent or FCS football in general. They tell me they like to go to the game because its “fun” but few of them could name 5 players. Many of them talk about going to the game like they talk about going to a concert; it’s purely an entertainment venue. The one thing they do know about their team is how many times they beat the Cats and how many NC they have won and how many times they have been in the playoffs. When they are playing Ft Lewis they don’t know the difference between that and playing Wofford. They expect to win like it is a god given right.
On the other hand many of the Cat fans that I know personally, know as much or more than I do about these same things. We can actually talk about how impressive the EWU team is this year and wonder how to handle them next year, I can almost guarantee that if a griz fan is in on the conversation they will look at us and say “well they weren’t good enough this year, we beat them, didn’t we” but don’t have a clue what we are talking about.
Ok, there are a few OK griz fans but the majority that I know fall into the above class.

I agree with this on some level. I know some griz fans who consider it a social event. Talking to them about the intricacies of the game is almost impossible. I also know cat fans like that as well. I am sure that like most people, your friends are very similar to you. They are cat fans that know football. My friends are like me as well. They are griz fans that know football. I think you are simplifying the situation to suit your dislike for the griz. Since you likely don't know the majority of griz fans, I think a more accurate statement would be that the majority of griz fans that you know are like that. I have most of my football conversations with a cat fan who is my brother. He went to the game with me yesterday and we were able to have a civil conversation about it. I told him on the trip down that I don't hate the cats. I hate him, but not the cats. My neice's ex boyfriend plays for the cats and I don't hate him.
My impression is that there are griz fans who are spoiled. They not only believe that it is there god given right to win, but they should win by 45 points. They should pass for 500 yards and the other team should roll over and die before the game starts. They believe that every star player should play for the griz and we should never lose a recruit.
Guess what? I know some cat fans who are like that as well.
I don't consider these people knowledgable fans. They are fans none the less and have the right to call themselves fans. I don't have to like it, but I am not going to waste my time obsessing over them.
