Rationalize Anything with Statistics

Post by Sandcat » Tue Aug 07, 2007 11:33 pm

Division II Grand Valley St Lakers were the best team of 2006.
You can argue your team was best if you pick up the string where your team is listed.

Champions - Grand Valley State - they beat Northwest Missouri, who beat Chadron St, who beat Bobcats. who beat Colorado, who beat Texas Tech, who beat Texas A&M, who beat Texas, who beat Iowa, who beat the Griz, who beat Southern Illinois, who beat Indiana, who beat Western Michigan, who beat Virginia, who beat Miami, who beat Boston College, who beat Florida St, who beat UCLA, who beat USC, who beat Arkansas, who beat Auburn, who beat Florida.

That is what makes College football so great.

I've seen a similar thing done for Northern Colorado as well. Just goes to show comparing teams by what they did against similar opponents doesn't really prove anything.

I think when you do the whole six degrees of separation thing it's only supposed to go up, not up then down then up again.

But, I know what you mean. A Griz buddy of mine and I usually do the same thing every year to see how far we can get the Cats and Grizzlies. You can usually get one of them to the national championship game in basketball, but football is a little tougher because there's fewer games and not as much parity.

The six degrees is not too difficult but i wanted to include both the Cats & Griz in the string. Took about an hour while sitting through a CPE seminar on the dangers of overreliance on statistics.

Kmax summed up my point.
