FCS College Football Review

Post by grizzh8r » Sun Jul 22, 2007 3:02 pm

For those of you that thirst for FCS football knowledge, Phil Steele has upped his coverage to include a quarter page on each FCS team in the Pac-10 Regional Magazine. Here is what he said in his CFB Review 2007 Magazine on this subject.
At the end of last year, the NCAA changed its' terminology and began referring to 1AA teams as FCS teams which stands for Football Championship Subdivision. They are calling 1A teams FBS teams which stands for Football Bowl Subdivision. Now, I study college football 365 days a year and here I am in the early part of May, and I still can't get those initials embedded into my head. I have the feeling that you are in the same boat as we have referred to them as 1A and 1AA for too many years.

.....

Jim Seman, a longtime member of my staff who works until 6:00 AM on Sunday mornings during football season making sure all of the stats for both 1A and 1AA are entered into our computer system, is our resident 1AA expert. He wrote two pages with a Top 25 forecast in the 2005 Regionals. When I read through the questionnaires (yes, I read every one!) that summer there was growing interest in an expanded 1AA coverage. In 2006, I went wild. I had Jim write up a full-length paragraph on each 1AA team and we expanded to 26 pages of coverage putting all 26 pages into my Pac 10 Regional Magazine.

This year I expanded it again and now have and easy-to-read format (one quarter of a page) on each team. This year, we are going to start using some of the same computer formulas and systems that I use for 1A forecasts for the 1AA teams. These include my 8 sets of power ratings, applying those ratings to the upcoming schedule, Turnovers=Turnaround and all of the various forecast articles such as YPP, Letterman Lost, Starts Lost to Injury, etc. My goal is to have it be BY FAR the most in-depth 1AA preseason magazine and like the 1A version also the most accurate.

This year once again my 1AA guide will be found in the Pac 10 Regional Magazine. It will be AT LEAST 35 pages. To my knowledge Street and Smith is the only other national magazine which gives at least a paragraph on each 1AA team but this year I feel we have surpassed that with the statistical history and one quarter page provided on each team. I would love to increase the coverage to a half page next year and then perhaps a full page in upcoming years. If that happens, the FCS would have its own complete magazine. As always, it will happen if the demand is high enough so you, the reader, hold the key. IF you are passionate about 1AA football then head out to any newsstand in the west where the Pac 10 Regional is sold and pick one up this year. If you are not out West you can order the magazine on my website www.philsteele.com or by calling 1-800-654-3448.
Sorry for pimping his magazines on BN, but I feel it is important. Right now, we have a golden opportunity to get more coverage of the best classification in all of CFB!

The mag costs $6.99 + $1 S&H. I'm buying the Pac 10 Regional to see what it is like. If he does a good job, I'll likely be a return customer.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

Lindy's does two pages of FCS, but I would definitely take 33 more for good measure.

I'll buy, but can you get me the magazine by the first of August?

You can probably find it at a bookstore near you, PapaG. His website says that Barnes & Noble, Borders, Waldenbooks, Wal-Mart, B Daltons, and Hastings carry his mags. I bought my copy of his 2007 CFB Reveiw at a supermarket... After all, you are on the west coast, and that is where the Pac 10 Review is distributed.

However, if you order early this week, I'm sure it would be delivered by August 1.
