UNC Budget in trouble.....

Post by WYOBISONMAN » Mon Jul 09, 2007 10:34 am

This from the Greely Tribune....

The University of Northern Colorado is slicing $400,000 from its athletic budget, but athletic director Jay Hinrichs is confident the short-term cuts will lead to a long-term solution for the UNC athletic department.

The Bears made the cuts to reach their fiscal budget of just over $6.4 million for the 2007-08 fiscal year. The cuts are a 17 percent reduction from a year ago. UNC is the lowest-funded athletic department in the Big Sky Conference.

"This fiscal year will be the toughest year we've had to face," Hinrichs said.

Also this:

Hinrichs does see help on the horizon for next year. The Bears will receive $500,000 in assistance from the Big Sky Conference and the NCAA Special Assistance Fund and that combined with the guaranteed money from the school's football game with Purdue will bring in over 1.1 million at the beginning of the next fiscal year.

Does the BSC normally give money to individual schools like that?

Only to schools that are in a Metro area of 350K or more.

Yet another reason why we should not have brought UNC into the conference... These guys are a joke!

Greeley isn't part of Denver, that's like saying Bozeman is part of Billings. (I know, I grew up in the area)

Forgive me, but it is only 60 miles and the county holds 230K.

Why did we invite them in only to have to subsidize them? Great plan. Are they in a trial period? Can we kick them out yet?

Isn't that some ass-backwards thinking right there? Shouldn't a metro area of 350K+ be able to support a university? Hell, the metro area around Bozeman and Missoula combined might reach half that number. What a friggin joke.

All the more reason not to bring the so-called "big market" schools in to the BSC. I am thoroughly disgusted.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

As for big market, it is a market in which there is lots of competition. You have three (Colorado, CSU, and Wyoming) D-I schools nearby, plus a big part of No-Co is part of Husker Nation, a professional football team and that puts a I-AA school low on the list of sports priorities in the Denver/Colorado area. No surprise that what has traditionally been a DII school is a hard sell. Hell, up until the last 6 or so years the most high profile football event in Greeley was Broncos training camp each summer.

I for one am not surprised that UNC is having trouble with athletics.
