Griz player arrested: Jimmy Williams

Post by bobcatgrad2005 » Wed Jun 13, 2007 9:43 pm

From KPAX:

UM cornerback faces murder charges in California slaying

June 13, 2007 09:20 PM MDT

Authorities say University of Montana cornerback Jimmy Wilson is in custody in Los Angeles County on murder charges. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told the Antelope Valley Press newspaper of Palmdale, California, that Wilson is accused of shooting and killing a man on June 2nd.

A deputy, Kelly Simon, identified Wilson as a University of Montana football player. Wilson was being held in Los Angeles County on one million dollars bail. Wilson turned himself in to authorities Tuesday in Lancaster, California, which is about an hour northeast of Los Angeles.

Authorities say he was involved in an altercation between 29-year-old Kevin Smoot, and a woman who is related to Wilson. Los Angeles County authorities says Wilson went to Smoot's home on June 2nd and shot him. Policy say Smoot was shot in the upper torso and later died.

Wilson, whose given name is James Leon Wilson , is a San Diego native who came to Montana right out of high school. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.

I to see another bright young man destroy his life. What the problem, it was not worth killing someone over.

On the brighter side, maybe this will take some heat off our program.

Wow, how truly sad that a young man would resort to that and essentially end his own promising life at the same time. My heart goes out to all those affected by this.

I would also like to take a quick moment to please ask everyone to take the high road on this one. As we are all way too painfully aware, no program is above reproach so now is not the time for rivalry wars over these types of extremely unfortunate issues.

Thanks Cat fans for your kind words. This stinks. I feel sorry for the Smoot family, the guy had two young kids! Just horrible, I'm sick hearing about this.

You never want to hear something like this has happened but it goes to show that it can happen to any program. You just can't watch over these kids all the time.

Most griz fans have been very classy about the problems we have had recently. For those who have not, I do not expect to hear another word.

Sorry. Should've checked here first. Here's the ESPN article. This is just surreal right now.

Obviously we don't know all the details.

At this point, they're just saying it's been a bad time for the two big Montana football programs. I don't think there's any reason to read anything into that paragraph. But it's a sad day for the Griz, that's for sure. I guess all of us Montana football fans should band together and support those who are doing right in the world.

Not saying you aren't being cool 94VC, but everyone be cool about this. The details aren't out yet. Wilson may have been defending himself for all we know. It's a terrible tragedy. This guy was "ON" the UM team and was a starter, so it's even more damning (school-wise,alum-wise) than the Lebrum/Miller situation we went through, so, as was stated by kmax....take the high road.

Don't react to UM's reactions either. They're bound to say some ill-thought out things on egriz (some are already trying to figure out who'll replace Wilson at cornerback). Just take it with a grain of salt for now until they get their feet back under them.

I don't mean to lecture.

I think two guys have wondered who will replace him. Yeah probably way to early to be wondering that, but it could just be a knee-jerk reaction.

It is a knee-jerk reaction and I was using those as an example. Please don't take it as anything but that. It wasn't a commentary on Griz fans. I just want everyone here to treat Griz fans with respect through this. Not trying to be holier than thou. Just want UM fans to know we feel for you.

Horrible news, and even worse is that he is a current starter for Griz. It makes you wonder if things aren't so rosy in Missoula.

I wish the best for Mr. Smoot's children.

While I think many of us are "hated" rivals in sports this goes to show that our rivalry should stop once off the field or court. Both schools are going through problems with players and as fans we should support each shool and each other through times like this.

Hopefully this isn't connected to drugs dependently or independently with what's gone on here. Sounds more like some kind of domestic dispute than having any kind of drug connotations. We'll just have to sit tight and see how it unfolds.

Amen to that. Our rivalry is a great thing and we all need to remember that we wouldn't have it without each other. That's so obvious, it's often overlooked. Hang in there Grizzlies.

A guy on egriz is already blaming "inner city kids" and basically hinting to african american men. It makes me sick, I know you cat fans heard the same from Griz fans with the recent issues as well.

This past month has made me sick to my stomach. Now I just want to throw up. Enough already. Drugs and Murder. When will it end in this state. I renewed my season tickets, the cat's just got a new coach, I was ready to set cruise contol until the end of August, and then WHAM!, another shot below the belt. I just can't take it any more. I get nervous every time I check the message boards.

Very good post crazy! I went over to the dark side's website to see how they were taking it, and almost threw up. One idiot whose name I will omit actually posted that he hoped Wilson would get off! Easy time to kick a team when they are down, but I'll pass. Good luck, Griz fans. We've been there and we know the pain you are feeling. My prayers out to the victim's family, Wilson's family, UM & Griz fans, and the state of Montana.
