Football early signing period

Post by mslacat » Tue May 29, 2007 9:22 am

Hey just something I saw this week end.

Right now NCAA college football is the only sport I believe that does not have an true early signing period. There is a period right now between late December and mid January for JC or D-1 player to transfer into a program and allow them to enroll at their new school, and participate in spring drills, but it for the most part does not included high school players.
Well it has been talked about for a while, but now it appears that that a true early signing period for high school players could become a reality. Officially, it was proposed before the NCAA last week, a lot of details need to be worked out, but it appears the signing period will be a one week period before or near the start of the high school football season, most likely first or second week of of September. This would allow high school seniors to get the decision out of the way.

Based on what I heard it is going to happen, it is only a matter of time. Maybe by as early as the fall of 2008, but definitely by 2010. My recommendation for any high school athlete NEVER sign early, basketball, volleyball, or football. Wait until after the season. Waiting until later you always have a better picture as to the direction the program is heading, and you don't get stuck with a coach you did not originally sign up for. It should be real interesting how many coaches will be willing to commit that early to a football athletes that well over a year away from even showing up on campus. Especially in football where a great number of athletes take two years to physically be ready to play.

I think it would depend on the recruit and the program. If I had a chance to sign early with a Top 10 program, I would probably do it...The other thing is that by signing early, if you get injured in your senior season, you still have an opportunity. Otherwise, you would probably get passed over - especially if it were a career limiting or threatening injury.

Montana State IS what "they" think Montana is.
