Actually, I'm one Cat fan who does believe they were about right. I never thought the infractions were all that severe...nothing that couldn't be found at almost every other D-I school in the country, if you dug deep enough and long enough. By the same token, I don't believe the penalties were all that severe either. I know many people won't agree, but I just don't think the reduced scholarships are as big a deal as some people would have you believe. It may have a very minor, very short term, impact on the program, but overall it will be a fairly small hiccup in my opinion. And then there's the whole "vacated wins" thing, which is utterly ridiculous.
Good post.

Well, I guess that's true if you buy that Lyles wasn't paid the $25,000 to act as a recruiting representative. I don't know many who actually believe that, however.

And even at best, your argument seems to be: it's okay for the program to cheat, just don't give any benefits to the student-athlete.

It seems to me that what Oregon did was of far greater recruiting advantage than what UM did.
Almost every school in the USA was paying for recruiting services. Oregon couldn't get hammered, because Cal/LSU/USC/Alabama/etc. etc. were also cutting P.O.s to these services. If Oregon actually thought they were cheating, do you think they would actually cut a check from the athletic department? Besides, HS coaches get paid to coach at college camps, and if you think that doesn't buy access, you're kidding yourself. Anybody with a brain who closely followed the Oregon case knew it was hogwash, and that the penalties would be light. The worst part of it was it took the NCAA 2 YEARS of non-stop investigations at Oregon to come up with basically nothing but some trumped up chargers that can be found at every other school.

UM got off light, and it amuses me to see their fans still whine about the past, and try to change the penalties.
Excellent post!

This stuff won't go away even after it's over with. You got Krakauer nosing around and um fans bringing it up. Just keeping it in the news is hurting um.

Well, didn't hurt 'em so bad that they didn't come into our house and give us a pretty good lickin'.

I'd say it's time Cat fans stopped worrying so damn much about the Griz and hoping that this is the year their program falls to hell. 'Cause, newsflash: all evidence seems to suggest it won't.

That's the one.

I also find it much better in life to only have one pair of colored glasses. Switching back and forth can be confusing.

That's pretty much where I stand, too. Seems like the penalty fits the infraction. There are a lot of Griz fans that think it was too harsh and many Cat fans that thought it was too minor. At least the people I talked to about it. That's kind of why I think they're probably about right.

Hah! Say what you want about John K, (Trust me I say plenty), I'm here to tell you he bleeds blue and gold. Just because someone offers an objective
opinion doesn't mean they're an argumentative troll! We disagree about many things, pro sports teams, pizza,(vegetables on pizza.....really?), but
he is a total Cat fan and unlike many who call themselves fans and never get involved, John is a working member of the GF booster club who shows
up for every work session to help.

Yeah that was a little harsh. Consider it retracted. My thinking at the time was that egriz is just about the most shameful and wretched place on earth with nearly every thread degenerating into personal attacks of the lowest common human denominator. Only the most ardent of griz fans would ever claim that BN ever approaches that place, and so when you essentially agreed with tampa’s trolling comparison between the two sites, I made the leap that you must be in griz fan. As in sports, great care must be taken in the use of the transitive property or mistakes and misjudgments will be made.

I took tampa's post to mean that he was a griz fan and thus felt the penalties were too strong. I don't think he was trying to say John was a gritz. For me (prely objective) I think the penaties should have been increased by one scholly for every gritz fan that wears a tin foil hat.

I was just messing on others' "Griz fan!" charge if someone disagreed with cb. I'm sure John K is a Cat fan.
