Not trying to build up the Griz here, and if you read the thread, you will see it came out pretty even.Cat Grad wrote:Why don't you do it on egriz. That way, I'm certain you'll get a sympathetic ear because I doubt you'll find one out of hundred who gives a rats arse about listening to any of you build up your program here.

Wow, I don't know how you ever came up with Maine as a cupcake. Maine not only went to the playoffs in 2001 and 2002, they advanced in both years to the final 8. In 2003 they were one of the preseason favorites to win the A-10. In 2004 they beat an SEC team, Mississippi St., a pretty big feat for any I-AA team. Cupcake -- I don't think so.MashTun wrote: Creampuffs in Bold

I'm sure it was just an over site, but you can't count S. Utah as a cupcake for Montana without counting it for MSU since the Bobcats also play them this year.
You missed Albany as a cupcake for Montana in 2002. No question they were a cupcake back then; however, now they have more scholarships. Last year they finished 7-4 and beat Delaware and Lehigh -- two teams who are pretty familiar to those who follow the I-AA playoffs. Once a team starts beating teams from the major playoff conferences, I don't consider them a cupcake. They may not be a great team, but I don't think anybody in the A-10 or Patriot leagues will overlook them this year.

Overall, I don't think there is a huge difference between the non-conference schedules. MSU has played more I-A games. UM has played more I-AA teams from the playoff conferences.

twentythree04,
If you see my response to GW after I posted the chart, I did say I missed Maine. Sam Houston could be included for a year based on win/loss.
I'd agree we're pretty close over the 02-07 span. Without looking at home/away, relative strength factors. Go for it breaking it down that way, that would be fun. I'd especially like to see the home/away breakdown.
Cats played more lower level teams in the early part of the span. Griz are catching up quickly lately at the donut table.

Like I've said, if anyone wants to parse the games down further, go right ahead. Ranking by class(1-AA etc.) and poll ranking would be interesting.catatac wrote:I haven't been following this thread, but just glanced at your list... if you are attempting to highlight the cupcakes for both... it's innacurate. Not all DII schools are cupcakes, and Gardner Webb was 1AA and ranked in the top 25 when we beat them.
I didn't say the chart was definitive or that DII schools are all cupcakes.
My chart was better than anything else put up to that point. There were a lot of posts that made claims about this and that, I put some form to it from actual history from I-AA.org archives.
If someone wants to add to it and refine it, go ahead, do the work, revise the chart and repost, instead of picking here and there.
Holy smokes...I was hoping to put the controversy to bed

What controversy? If you're a Cat, you know for a fact the fizzlies suck and will pad their home schedule. Hell, check out their home playoff attendance compared to the regular season. They can't "bear" the thought of watching somebody as a lower seed come in from another conference and beat them in either the first or second round...

Well yeah...I know the fizzlies suck and the CATS are the best. Everyone on the 'Nation' knows that.Cat Grad wrote:What controversy? An excellent source for schedules and records for all teams since 1945 is http://www.michigan-football.com/ncaa/ncaa_1aa.htm. If you actually take the time to compare its pretty hard to rationalize that either the Cats or the Griz had more cream puffs on their schedule, regardless of the decade. Nonetheless, I'm sure the argument will continue

Some people can look at facts all day and still see it their way. So be it.
(and incidentally, the Griz lead the nation in playoff attendance: no one draws well for the Thanksgiving game weekend. But I know: why should we let facts get in the way of "bobcat reality"?).
