The Cat D has been impressive with these teams especially PSU, I am not looking forward to going against that D. Yet Chadron and UCD are stunning.
Thats just dumb to say

crazycat wrote:UM has a big lead in scoring 'offense', but you have to wonder just how many of those points have been scored (or at least set up) by the defense and special teams. Scoring is a little misleading that way. I mean, MSU's defense didn't give up ANY of those 18 pts against SSU, but it shows up in the stats that way.
You make a good point. Here is how UM scored their points in the 4 conference games:
Sac TD 50 yard drive, TD 25 yds, TD 72 yds, FG 66 yds, TD 73 yds, TD 27 yds, TD 24 yds, TD 59 yds, TD 16 yds.
PSU TD Int Teturn, TD 49 yds, safety, TD 79 yds, FG 51 yds.
EWU TD 28 yds, TD punt rtn, TD 36 yds, TD 45 yds, FG 5 yds, FG 69 yds
NAU TD 46yds, TD 65 yds, FG 55yds, TD 7 yds.

Certainly the Griz O has been helped by the D and special teams. It should have been worse, since the Griz had several opportunities in the red zone that turned into turn overs instead of points.

On the other hand the Griz defensive stats can be a little misleading as well. For example 10 of the points PSU scored the defense wasn't on the field. Also 2 of the Sac and EWU games were both blowouts, with reserves on the field - for example Sac had an 80 yard TD drive late in the game when the Griz were leading 45-7. EWU had a 68 yard TD drive with 45 seconds left and the Griz leading 33-10.

Had these games been as close the the Cat games against these teams and likely the starters would have been in the game and the stats would have been different. It would be more telling to see the defensive stats when both teams have their 1's and 2's and exclude 3's and 4's.

i remember a similar discussion last year about who had the best defense and based on what statistics you used, both sides were correct.

it would be hard for me to put the griz d as the best, but equally as difficult not to consider them in the top.

how is that for saying absolutely nothing?

Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Cats will find out soon enough just how good the Griz D is.

The griz gave up 220 yards to Sac @ home. The Cats gave up 85 yards to Sac on the road. I think the griz are going to be the ones finding out how good the Cats D is.

Maybe, but if we're only comparing based on one common opponent, why choose Sac? If you compare both teams' defensive performances vs, say, NAU, you get a very different picture, don't you?

Also, remember that the Griz were up HUGE in that game and played 2nd, 3rd and 4th teamers for much of the 2nd half.

Obviously both teams have very good defenses. UM's defense and special teams has the edge in that they've created scoring opportunities for their offense and actually scored themselves. I don't think MSU's STs or D have scored all year. Over the last two games, I'd say MSU is better, but on the year UM has the edge.

I also think that both are pretty even on offense. I thought going into the year that UM would have the edge, but Lex was injured and Swogger has been only slightly better than average IMO, instead of lighting it up as the common thought seemed to be. MSU is tough to read due to all the injuries, but aside from a horrid game against UC-Davis has really had some bright spots. Jefferson, Wheaton, Mason, have all had huge games.

I think you have to give credit to UM's special teams. That's where I'd say they have the biggest edge. If you look at the league stats they lead or are near the top in all of the ST stats. The lose their punter, but still lead the league in punting. Their return guys Harris/Schulte are good, too. If I was game planning them, I'd amp up my ST reps in practice.

I agree with Crazy. The primary difference between the two teams right now is special teams. Montana's have been very, very good.

I'll think long and hard before preceeding with caution about that statement.

Use whatever example you want! How about we use NAU, where Murietta torched your D for 32 points!!!! Against us, he had less than 100 yards!

If you could remind me, where was the NAU/um griz game played?

And one request, could you please research how many members of the Cat D were out with injuries (or only played sparingly) when they traveled TO Flagstaff?

This kind of argument is more about convincing yourself than anyone else.
All of this "comparative analysis against a common foe" is BS.
The only comparison of any validity will be the score at the end of the Brawl.

All the weed is going to his head so he can't think straight anymore. All those 420 references are about as cool as the Zubaz and mullet he sports.

How you can talk smack about the Griz D after that stat is amazing.
MSU 16 UM 6........That's how.
Are we going to quote games from the past or this year??? Because We've got 17 years of the past in a row...

Come on, be relevant to this season at least. And DaGriz, the Cats are a different team from those two games.

I always understood it as the team that won the brawl had bragging rights until the next game was played. I guess referring to that game is not really relevant since our O this year is turning out to be much more dynamic. Watch out frizzlies.
