Re: Griz fans appeal UM sanctions
Initially, this struck me as stupidity at a stratospheric level. It's pretty clear that (right or wrong) the NCAA feels the boosters associated with UM are part of the problem, and the whole idea that a bunch of boosters can write up a document that can enable any kind of change is really laughable. Then I started thinking to myself...you know, Darth...Wahlberg and his gang aren't stupid. So something doesn't add up. At that moment I realized that none of this has the goal of reducing the NCAA penalty. The goal, which is wisely hidden by Wahlberg, is to create enough of a media sh!tstrom that eventually the President and AD can be pushed out. Thinking that a handful of boosters can influence the NCAA compliance folks is laughable at best, but thinking that a handful of boosters can initiate the sequence of events that enact a change in the administration is not only doable, but Wahlberg has already proven beyond a shadow of doubt that he's willing and very capable of doing exactly that.

Meh, it's spring and people have nothing better to talk about. Might as well talk about other people's problems.

Let me make sure I understand. LTCF and tampa are saying somebody else made a long winded post on a topic nobody really cares about?LongTimeCatFan wrote:Kind of what I was thinking too.tampa_griz wrote:BN never....ever....gets to make fun of eGriz again.

I claim the whole concept of boosters influencing the NCAA compliance folks is a ridiculous idea, and has actually has some serious irony. It’s somewhat akin to asking for asking for a Synagogue to be built in a concentration camp. The whole notion is that far off in my opinion. I am really surprised Wahlberg is leading that effort because he's normally on point. Because Wahlberg is normally taking on causes that actually stand a chance of success (i.e. the Pat Williams effort that I supported), I suggested the effort is really pointed in a different direction. Can you please point to anything that has anything to do with a Cat vs griz conspiracy? Do you have a ‘grown up’ response to my opinion?tampa_griz wrote:About a Griz vs. Cats nutty conspiracy? Nope. Keep an eye on this folks. The media is certainly picking this up, and my predicted outcome of Engstrom/Haslam losing their job on this while the NCAA scholarship penalty remaining firmly in place, is a very plausible outcome. Hardly a nutty conspiracy IMO, and I really can’t figure out how this is a Cat vs grizz conspiracy. Anyway, I will be obligated to come back and give LTGF and tampa a digital chest poke if in fact that's the way it plays out. Unfortunately, I will also have to give a digital chest poke to TC88. It will pain me to do it, but unfortunately he will have earned one.
If not, well then I will be happy to eat some crow. Although I'm firmly behind my notion that there is no way in hell the NCAA makes a reversal and Wahlberg knows it.

Re: Griz fans appeal UM sanctions
I see Jack Manning is quoted in the most recent article in the Missoulian. That alone feeds into your idea that this could have something to do with putting heat on Engstrom. If Manning is playerrep over on egriz and IF (and its a big if right now) he's part of this group that created the petition/request then there's a chance that what you're saying is at least a secondary motive for what they're doing, because playerrep is constantly bad mouthing Engstrom and if I remember correctly he's been talking about Engstrom getting removed, or something like that.Darth Yoda wrote:Keep an eye on this folks. Re: Griz fans appeal UM sanctions
Using Oregon as a template for Griz penalties is disingenuous, at best, considering no Oregon players were found to have received extra benefits. I'd probably drop that from the platform, if you want people to take you seriously.

A lot of Griz fans think the penalties were too harsh, while a lot of Cat fans thought they were too minor. So are they just right?

Well, I guess that's true if you buy that Lyles wasn't paid the $25,000 to act as a recruiting representative. I don't know many who actually believe that, however.
And even at best, your argument seems to be: it's okay for the program to cheat, just don't give any benefits to the student-athlete.
It seems to me that what Oregon did was of far greater recruiting advantage than what UM did.

Re: Griz fans appeal UM sanctions
Almost every school in the USA was paying for recruiting services. Oregon couldn't get hammered, because Cal/LSU/USC/Alabama/etc. etc. were also cutting P.O.s to these services. If Oregon actually thought they were cheating, do you think they would actually cut a check from the athletic department? Besides, HS coaches get paid to coach at college camps, and if you think that doesn't buy access, you're kidding yourself. Anybody with a brain who closely followed the Oregon case knew it was hogwash, and that the penalties would be light. The worst part of it was it took the NCAA 2 YEARS of non-stop investigations at Oregon to come up with basically nothing but some trumped up chargers that can be found at every other school.Jobu wrote:PapaG wrote:Using Oregon as a template for Griz penalties is disingenuous, at best, considering no Oregon players were found to have received extra benefits. UM got off light, and it amuses me to see their fans still whine about the past, and try to change the penalties.

Re: Griz fans appeal UM sanctions
Actually, I'm one Cat fan who does believe they were about right. I never thought the infractions were all that severe...nothing that couldn't be found at almost every other D-I school in the country, if you dug deep enough and long enough. By the same token, I don't believe the penalties were all that severe either. I know many people won't agree, but I just don't think the reduced scholarships are as big a deal as some people would have you believe. It may have a very minor, very short term, impact on the program, but overall it will be a fairly small hiccup in my opinion. And then there's the whole "vacated wins" thing, which is utterly ridiculous.TomCat88 wrote:A lot of Griz fans think the penalties were too harsh, while a lot of Cat fans thought they were too minor. Re: Griz fans appeal UM sanctions
Main part was to compare recent histories of penalties and the actions that caused them compared to ours, not to suggest one or another is similar to the UM's.PapaG wrote:Using Oregon as a template for Griz penalties is disingenuous, at best, considering no Oregon players were found to have received extra benefits.
