You have been questioning the motives of these people through this whole thread, CR. Please don't pretend otherwise. It's kind of insulting to those of us who have read this thread.
And I'm not buying the hurt act, either. That wasn't even the least bit a "personal shot" on you. Quite the contrary, if you actually read what I wrote. Methinks you are just using the "personal" retort to cover for the fact that you realize that I made a perfectly on-point comparison that blew up your cynicism.
But if I need to spell it out for you ... being outspoken on an issue does not necessarily mean that a person is an "activist" whose views should be disregarded. Sometimes (now pay attention to this part), those "activists" are right in retrospect.
Don't you agree?

Nothing you have said has blown anything up! You and I disagree on the topic, and that was said earlier this afternoon.Bay Area Cat wrote:You have been questioning the motives of these people through this whole thread, CR. Vatican City (AP) - Pope Benedict XVI has scheduled a news conference for Thursday, Nov. 29th. While details of the news conference were not released, a spokesman close to his Holiness said that the Pope was "in discussions" with a small, private, Catholic college" located in Helena, MT regarding their use of the nickname "Fighting Saints". Calls to Carroll Athletic Director Bruce Parker were not returned.

On the news clips they showed from the tribal meeting, one member equated fighting this mascot with the African American's fight to stop the "n" slur.Bay Area Cat wrote:Okay ... but I haven't seen any Indians quoted as actually having said that. We can agree that neither of us thinks that "Fighting Sioux" is the same as the "N" word.Bleedinbluengold wrote:At the start of the thread, ChiO said that the tribes equate "Fighting Sioux" to the "N" word, basically.

(Bear in mind where I live when reading this)
I was at the gym the other morning and this HUGE brother walked in. Probably 6'4", 260. Ripped. Had the full-on braids that are so popular in football these days. Very much looked and spoke like he'd never spent a day outside the South and had definitely never even thought of living outside of a very urban environment. What was he wearing? A green t-shirt with the UND logo and the words "Sioux Crew" (their version of the Blue Crew, maybe?). So, I just HAD to ask.
"Did you go to North Dakota?!?!?!?"
"Nah, man. I was just driving through and saw a guy at a gym with this shirt. Asked him if I could have it and he gave it to me."
One of the most surreal experiences of my life. I would've given him my shirt, too...

Ahh, once again, it is time to pull out one of my all-time favorite quotes:
"Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a
delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted
by an unscrupulous mainstream Media, which holds
forth the proposition that it is entirely possible
to pick up a turd by the clean end."
Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all night.
Also...
To all those mealy-mouthed, weakling, nobody's-feelings-can-get-hurt-anymore sallies out there I have one suggestion:
GROW A PAIR AND GROW UP!

So does this philosophy apply to everyone and all issues, or just to issues that you guys don't have a personal stake in?CPACAT wrote:amen brother amengrizzh8r wrote:Ahh, once again, it is time to pull out one of my all-time favorite quotes:

In other words, if someone said something that you considered offensive about your family or a group of people that you passionately cared about (say, MSU sports fans, teams, etc., for instance), would you guys pass on responding or trying to correct that person ... or would you resist those PC temptations and just ignore it?
If the latter, I commend you ... and if everyone was true to that, our smack board sure wouldn't get much use.

Is the point of that video that getting rid of offensive mascots means that people will be mandated to have lame mascots?College Recruiter wrote:Is this where we are going??

I would not presume to answer that question on behalf of these University of Illinois students...you could log onto the blog and ask them.Sportin' Life wrote:Is the point of that video that getting rid of offensive mascots means that people will be mandated to have lame mascots?
I do suspect they are taking a jab at the dogooders who spear head such non-essential movements however. Just a guess???!!!
As for what mascots will look like in the future in light of all of this elitist PC movement. Here is the proposed mascots for the 2010 Olympics.....unless you are a Martian, a Pokemon aficionado, or a Japanese animation nut, you probably won't be offended by this!! They really engender that old competitive spirit don't they? Get ready to get pumped up!!

So what is your favorite old-school "non-PC" Olympic mascot?College Recruiter wrote: As for what mascots will look like in the future in light of all of this elitist PC movement. Mine was the "Fierce Money-grubbing Dirty Jew" and his co-mascot "Savage Mud Person" (modeled on a rough sketch of Jesse Owens, of course) from the 1936 Berlin Olympics. I tell ya, when they staged mock Roman Gladitorial skits between the two mascots in a faux fight to the death, it really got my juices pumping. They really embodied the spirit of international competition on a sporting field in a way that those oh-so-"PC" mascots of today just can't touch, eh?
The sooner people remember that the Olympics are about international hatred and intimidation, the better off we will all be.
But yeah, those pansies today, with their "PC" ethos of not wanting to offend people ... Lord knows that College Recruiter is virtually impossible to offend. Well, as long as you don't violate his one-month statute of limitations for bringing up things he wrote in old posts. When you bring up his old posts and contrast what he wrote to a present conversation, he will take strong personal offense ... and whine incessantly about it before resuming his belittling of others for whining about their cultural issues. Apparently the "PC" gremlins got to him, too! Now he's just another PC whiner!
But, granted, repeating what somebody wrote in an old post and contrasting it to a current conversation is WAAAYYYY worse than any of this PC whining people are doing about the presentation of their culture and people by others in the form of a cartoonish mascot bearing common stereotypes that don't portray those people in a way they feel is representative of their real culture. Besides, you never heard the Jews complain about the 1936 sitution, did you?

I was always partial to the Olympic mascot/symbol "the discuss thrower", but he is out of vogue now for 4 reasons:
-too European
-too naked
-too male
-too masculine
at least one of these issues no doubt will cause much discomfort and likely will harm the psyches of a small number of folks around the world, so we rightly trashed that symbol for this:

BAC you honestly equivalate "Fighting Sioux" with "Money Grubbing Dirty Jew" or "Savage Mud Person"?????
The name is not derogatory. If they want to call themselves the Fighting Dutchies I would approve. In fact if they wanted to call themselves The Drunk Happy Honkies from the North or the Fat Lazy White Dudes I wouldn't get offended. The point is they are referring to THEIR team, not the people around them.
Either way I could give a hoot less if they have to change their name.... I just think it is a waste of time and money that could be spent on doing worth while things.....

I like that statue as well ... it is a very impressive work. But it is currently on public display (I just saw it), so I'm pretty sure that nobody is hiding it anywhere or anything ... and it was never an Olympic mascot.College Recruiter wrote:Bay Area Cat wrote:So what is your favorite old-school "non-PC" Olympic mascot?
