There is no such thing as a "guaranteed commitment" because there is no muscle behind it! If Brock got an offer from Duke, and decided to go there Gonzaga could do nothing to hold him to the commitment. On the other hand lets say Brock blew his knee out next year and by the time he was a senior he was still good but not as good as Gonzaga thought he would be, they would drop him like a hot potato, and Brock could do nothing about it except sign with Montana State.

Case in Example: Two years ago a kid I knew was being recruited by a Pac-10 school. The school said they had no scholarships left. One option that was presented to the kid was the Pac-10 school would place this kid in a top notch JC / with a scholarship, but the he would have to sign a commitment letter saying the kid would only sign with the Pac-10 school. The kids parents thought this was screwy and asked the NCAA about this commitment letter. The NCAA told them that the paper would not be worth anything to the NCAA nor legally. To follow this up the NCAA sent the Pac-10 coach a letter saying don't do this again. The kid signed with another school. Later he found out that the Pac-10 coach "placed" many kids at this JC and another over the years, but only offered/signed a very few of the athletes "placed". Leaving a lot of athlete in the lurch come signing time.

Committing this early is a better deal for the school than the Athlete. It does very little for the athlete, but tend to persuade other school not waste resources by recruiting a committed kid. No way in heck would I let my son commit to a program before the end of his junior basketball season, unless he wanted to commit to Montana State.

Lance Brockie can barely get up and down the court... And why hasn't anyone heard of him?? Long Soldier is legit though. For even mentioning Brockie in the same sentence as being a D-1 Basketball player questions your credibility.

And for what it's worth, ya'll know Charlie Ereaux played for Kermit Young for a year after he graduated...

Found this quote on line commenting on Brocks commitment to Gonzaga.
Paul Katcher of sportsbybrooks.com, after a ninth-grade high school player in Montana signed a basketball pledge with Gonzaga: "Maybe not such a great idea. When I was that age, I made a verbal commitment to Elle Macpherson, and that didn't exactly work out as I'd hoped."

Just a question, What programs do you think can get that early of a commitment from a kid. I would think only a select few have the ability as most kids that good will hold out for the offer from a "more elite" program. Example would be in this case MSU offering Brock now, he would probably not take it but did with Gonzaga. Any thoughts.

UNC, that is the only school in the country any freshman or sophomore should be willing to commit to.

Hays/Lodge Pole has a freshman named A.J. Long Soldier who's been offered by Vanderbilt and a rising senior named Lance Brockie that will probably be offered by Utah over the summer. Fairly used to seeing kids offered as early as middle school by ACC, SEC and Big East teams.
Long Soldier has been offered by Vandy? The only MT HS game I saw this year was between Winifred and Hays, and Winifred beat them ... although that kid was definitely very good ... and got into early foul trouble.
He must have pretty good grades to be offered by Vandy!
