Shake up in BB program at Northern Colorado
SIX PLAYERS LEAVE NORTHERN COLORADO:
At Greeley, Colo., the new basketball coach at Northern Colorado said Friday that six players are leaving the program.
Marcus Frye, Michael Gordy, Darren Jefferies, Jared Lewis, Dorian McDaniel and Austin Theis will not return to the squad for the 2006-07 season, coach Tad Boyle said.
‘‘For various reasons, these six young men will not be returning to our basketball program next year,’’ said Boyle.

That is really too bad, and a big blow for one of the worst teams in the nation last year. That transition to Big Sky ball may not be an easy on for them next season.catBBfan wrote:SIX PLAYERS LEAVE NORTHERN COLORADO:

Weber, too
Weber State also had a mass exodus of players -- only 5 players from this past season return. The new coach signed a bunch of JUCO guys. I believe you are playing Idaho next season, and they also lost 7 guys from the team (scholarships yanked, players leaving on their own).
In the case of UNC, it's probably a smart move for long term success (but they will take a hit the next year or so).

Thanks for the info, Bengal1!
I think UNC will benefit from taking a completely new direction in a few years or so. The process will be harsh, for sure. I hope they can compete. And Weber might be good again in a year or so, but losing 7 will cause for some lumps. Bengal1, how's the Idaho State situation working out?

ISU BB
Cautiously optimistic!how's the Idaho State situation working out?
The new coach, O'Brien, is an old friend of the AD, so it pretty much smelled of the good ol' boys club. But the guy has had success (3 JC national championships), and he has put what appears to be a good staff together. Assistant Steve Swanson has been the head coach of a British Basketball League team, and had them in the playoff finals this year. I've heard him compared to former Portland State coach, Heath Schroyer -- very intense but smart. He also hired Rodrick Rhodes, the former player at Kentucky (and USC, briefly) who was a 1st round NBA draft pick (in '97?). The word is that most recruits instanstly find a connection with this guy.
The new coach, O'Brien, has signed 4 HS kids (which suprised me, I half-way expect a quick fix of JC players), of which 2 seem pretty solid, 1 seems very iffy, and the 4th could turn out to be the best of the bunch. We lost 3 players (other than seniors) -- Baumgartner had his scholly pulled, Winters left to play closer to home at Dixie (it will be NCAA D2 next year), and the third, Stevens, is giving up the game. The loss of Winters will hurt, but the Texas Tech transfer, Ofoegbu, is supposed to me a monster inside (and we're hoping he remains eligible...).
Rumor is that Jacques Wilson dad, former ISU ass't Louis, has taken an assistant's job with Cal St-Northridge. Any worries he may transfer out (now that his dad should be secure for at least another couple of years)?
