Good post. Yes once the ball is in a players hands it's live regardless of whether the clock is running or not. I'd add, however, that the ball is dead once it passes through the hoop until the team scored upon grabs it.grizgirl wrote:More on dead ball definition.
BASKETBALL RULES SUMMARY
Rule 6: Live Ball & Dead Ball
1 There are only three ways to make a dead ball alive:
a) Jump Ball- When it leaves the referees hand
b) Throw In- When the ball is at the disposal of the thrower.
c) Free Throw- When the ball is at the disposal of the free thrower
The traveling and dribbling rules are not in effect during these situations.
Also, I believe in some leagues if you foul someone during a dead ball it's a technical. I know that has nothing to do with this conversation, but thought you all might find it interesting.
